I searched the Vista forum before posting this.

I have already installed Windows 7 twice, once as Build 7064 32 bit on a Compaq desktop, once as build 7000 64 bit on my Acer Aspire laptop, and both are performing well.

Now I am trying to install 7 on my desktop machine, (Athlon 64 x2 4200, Geforce 7300GT, 4GB DDR memory), but neither of the install DVDs will install it. Booting from the DVDs, which installed correctly on the two other machines, Windows files are loaded, and then the install stops on the first blue screen which has the build info and the mouse cursor.
Trying to install from inside Vista as an upgrade, which is how I did it on the others, both show the same message "Setup can not run on this version of the Operating System . . try booting from the install media "
I loaded the ISOs onto my HD, opened in Explorer, and double clicked on 'Setup.exe' and get the message "The version of this file is not compatible with this version of Windows "
Other software will still install correctly but Vista is somehow blocking the installer of 7. Has anybody else experienced this problem?

    Roger:(

In theory - you should burn the ISO to dvd which for lack of better words unzipps the ISO file.

I didn't make myself clear obviously. The DVD's were burnt from the original ISOs, and they both worked perfectly on the first two machines.

Slowly getting up the learning curve! Trying DVDs for 64 and 32 bit.

I installed a new 160GB HD as primary slave and formatted it NTFS. Windows 7 installer could not find it.
Installed the new HD on its own, ie to emulate a new machine with no OS. 7 said 'No HD'. I hope that these problems are tied to it being a beta release.

I tried again with Vista up and running, 32 bit DVD in the deck and selected the installer. 7 loaded files, started setup, and then said can't be done, try booting from the installation media.

Boot from the DVD, same procedure, load files etc.. Got the 'The version of this file not compatible with this version of Windows' message.

Another boot, ignored the 'Press any key" message, Vista booted OK, and could then install 7 from the DVD. Unfortunately 7 would not list a blank, formatted HD as useable but insisted on installing itself over the Vista installation. A long install but it all went well, found all my hardware, network, and updates.

It may be different on other machines but on mine there is a very long wait between the first steps. It sat with the blue screen giving the 'Testing purposes only' message for 6 minutes, and then another 5 minutes on the 'Setup is starting' screen. Waits of up to 45 minutes have been mentioned on one forum. Onece again I hope that this is because it is a beta release.

I have now re-installed a Vista image, and I'll try the 64 bit installation, but I still haven't worked out why my other two installations were so straightforward and problem free. If the problems that I have encountered on my machine are not due to the beta status of 7 it bodes ill for some other people I think.
