    1) In the Mozilla 1.2a I just installed on my XP Notebook alongside
Netscape 4.79, for some reason I can't seem to access the mail and
newsgroups page. When I click on the mail icon (even after I set it up
so it is my default mail page), the page just flashes and disappears.
What can I do to make it appear and stay?

2)I used to be able to get multiple windows in my Netscape 4.7 in the XP
Notebook, but now I can't seem to get them. What can I do to fix the
    problem?

    3) Also, on my desktop, (also XP) when I press on the search button it
gives a java script error message saying I should type 'javascript'into location for details.

What can I do to fix that?

    I would appreciate any answers.

    Hi Moorty,

Just a few questions, as it's late and my head is spinning with Netscape FAQ! ;)

Sounds like you're having a lot of problems with both Netscape 7.0 and Communicator.

First questions is: have you installed SP1 for Windows XP? If so, a lot of users are having one heck of a time with Netscape.

If this is not the case, then with 7.0 and the Mail problem, I would reinstall 7.0 over itself and see if that fixes inaccessibility.

Sounds like you might want to consider installing the Sun Java Plugin. If you decide to, you can download it here: http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4/download.html

Why you're unable to open multiple pages, I'm not sure. Have you done your browser maintenance lately, i.e., empty Trash, delete your Cache folder, delete netscape.hst file. If not, try doing so and see if that helps. I'll get back to you tomorrow... BTW do all your maintenance with Netscape closed.

    Netscape and Mozilla Problems

    Hi Ramona:

    Thank you for your reply.

Yes, I have installed SP1 on both the desktop and notebook computer. However, the multiple pages not appearing, and the mail and newsgroups not appearing are only problems occurring on the notebook. I thought 4.79 would do better than 7 so, I uninstalled 7 and installed 4.79 and that had no better luck. But I will do the maintenance you suggested and talk to you again tomorrow.

    Thanks, once again,
    Moorty

    Hi Ramona:

I just downloaded and installed the Java Runtime plugin from the Sun on my desktop. I don't see it making any difference. I still get the error message "java script error," type 'javascript' in location. When I do that I get no such page window. The plug in for was for Netscape 6, but mine is 4.79. But when I looked up in program files I found it mentioned Netscape 6. I don't quite get that.

Anyway, I will talk to you tomorrow.

    Hi Moorty,

Well, when we started, you were using Mozilla 1.2a, I said Netscape 7.0, my mistake, but basically the same fixes.

The Sun Java Plugin probably won't benefit your 4.79 significantly, but it would have made a difference in Mozilla.

I assume that you have checked your configuration in Preferences and have Java and JavaScript enabled? I know that's pretty basic, but often overlooked. Disable the Java Plugin if it is enabled.

So now you don't have Mozilla 1.2a installed on either PC, only 4.79. I'll wait to hear from you on your maintenance and then we can go from there. I'll also do some checking around to see what other XP users are experiencing.

Just a word about the service pack 1 for XP.

You can have two identical systems from the same manufacterer and install the service pack on both of them. One will work and the other will give all sorts of problems. I have not seen a good explanation for why this happens from anyone yet, so that is why it may be fine on one system, but the other has problems.

At least yours is working. I have seen systems that would blue screen on startup after installing SP1.

I have been recommending to not install SP1, unless you have just installed XP and nothing else. Those systems don't seem to have this problem, just ones that have been up and running for awhile.

Now Mozilla 1.2a is an Alpha release, so It may be unstable to begin with.

    Netscape and Mozilla Problems

    Hi Ramona:

Here are the answers to yours questions:

    1) About Java plug in, I downloaded and installed it on both computers. However, on the desktop I could get Java(TM) Runtime Environment 1.4.0_02 and on the Notebook I could only download j2re-1.3.1.04. I can't explain why from the same address I got two different versions. But, the plug-ins didn't seem to make any difference. I still have the 'javascript' error message in my desktop Netscape (4.79)

    2) On the Notebook I deleted Netscape.hst file, deleted the cache and trash in mail. That didn't seem to matter.

I diable both Java and Javascript from preferences both in Netscape and IE Internet options. That didn't seem to matter.

    3) I reinstalled Netscape 7.0 alongside 4.79 on the Notebook. I noticed that in 7.0, although I couldn't get Mail and News page by clicking on the icon in the toolbar (the screen flashes and goes away), they put up a separate for Mail and Newsgroups on the desktop by clicking which I could get the Mail and Newgroups page. (Then I can't get the Navigator from that page either.) From 7.0 (and from Mozilla) I can't access help files or some other pages either.

3a) I reinstalled Mozilla and uninstalled again, but it had the same problems.

    4) The main problem on the Notebook still remains, that is, when I click on a link which leads to another page (say a page on which you put in a password and username) that page flashes and goes away; and I can't open multiple instances of either Netscape or IE.

I think that's about all I have to report.

    Thanks again.
    Moorty

    Hi Moorty,

You have certainly been busy! So now you have Communicator 4.79, Netscape 7.0 and have uninstalled Mozilla 1.2a?

Have you created a unique profile for Netscape 7.0. If you don't, this can cause problems, and could be part of what is wrong. Let us know.

When you uninstalled Mozilla and Netscape, do you reboot before installing again?

In your Communicator 4.79 Preferences you can enable Java and JavaScript, but disable the Java Plugin.

    Problems in Netscape and Mozilla

Yes, I have communicator 4.79 and Netscape 7. And I have uninstalled Mozilla 1.2a.

In the new user profile I set up, the java and javascript are enabled, java plug in disabled. But that didn't make any difference. There was only one utilities manager in the programs, which is what I used. I didn't see a separate one for Netscape 7. Is there?

I am not sure I rebooted after I uninstalled Mozilla or Netscape 7. I probably didn't. But for Windows XP does that matter? Should start the whole thing again from scratch?

    Hi Moorty,
The Java/JavaScript settings will make a difference in 4.79, only if you visit a page with heavy Java coding. Without having them enabled, the pages would not be viewed as intended.

Remember, Communicator and Netscape 7 are two separate programs. Netscape 7.0 is not an upgrade, but a new program being developed from the ground up. Your Profile Manager for Netscape 7.0 can be accessed by clicking on:
    Start|Programs|Netscape 7.0|Profile Manager

I wouldn't do that at this point. The reason for the reboot is that your system files will be reconfigured, and Netscape files will be removed. I have a "Clean" install guideline here:
    http://home.att.net/~cherokee67/ns67cleaninstall.html
which might be helpful on your next unstall/reinstall.

If you want to use the Icon in your Quick Tray do this:

Right Click the Netscape 7.0 Navigator Icon in the Tray.
    Select Properties
    In the Target line add:
    "C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape\Netscp.exe" -quiet -P "ProfileName" -browser -mail
or whatever the Target would be for XP.

    -quiet no splash screen (optional)
    -P "ProfileName" (self explanatory)
    -browser (opens Navigator)
    -mail (opens mail and newsgroups)

Important note: there is one space between each command:
    sp-Psp "ProfileName "sp-browser etc.

With Mozilla, I have found one difference in the command lines. In the Profile Name Command, there can be no space between:
    -P and "ProfileName "
That is, on my system at least. Since you have uninstalled Mozilla, you won't have to worry about that now.

Post back and let us know if this helps.

    Hi Ramona:

Here is where the matter stands now:

Ihave deleted both Netscape 7 and Communicator 4.79 from the Notebook following your instructions on clean install (removing lines in registry etc.) and installed just Netscape 7 (from the setup files). I removed the user profiles that existed before and created a new one. But the old problem of not being able to open multiple instances or links to new pages remains.

The problem of opening mail from Navigator is not a big issue. However, I still can't open Help files, nor Navigator when the mail page is on or vice versa.

I only see one possibility now, that is to remove Windows SP1 and see if that makes any difference. But I don't know how I could do that because it is not listed in the Add/Remove Programs. Or I could try to Restore the computer to a previous state where hopefully there won't be any problems.

I am open to any suggestions.

    Moorty,

Did you try adding the command lines in the icon properties?

You should check in the WindowsXP Forum for advice on removing SP1.

I believe we have covered all the bases for Mozilla and Netscape. You have done a "Clean" install on your browser, created a new Profile, and if that doesn't fix your problems, then I think the problem lies elsewhere.

Moorty and I have been corresponding via PM, and he was able to resolve not being able to open multiple windows in Netscape 7.0.

He was not aware that you could use CTRL+N. Now he is a happy camper, and if anything else is resolved, we will bring it to the Forum.

Maybe on your system , but not on mine ;)

I NEED a space between the -P and "myprofilename" to start a specific profile in Mozilla 1.0.1 - for example,

    "C:\Program Files\mozilla.org\Mozilla\mozilla.exe" -P "wymette "

    And in conclusion......

Moorty is now up and running, and here are the suggestions I made, along with his success:
To answer your question Moorty, entering more than one Search Engine in the same profile won't work.
