Problems downloading Gmail attachments in Chrome and Edge

I seem to be having a problem all of a sudden with only being able to download one attachment in Gmail at a time, it flatly refuses to download a second attachment even from another email, the only way I can download a second attachment is to close Chrome and restart it I can then download a another single attachment before I have to close it again and restart it. Hope someone can help

Many thanks for your reply retiredlearner I had already tried all the suggestions without any success, the problem persists using all the browsers on my pc ie, Chrome , Edge and Firefox, I know it is something within Gmail that is causing the problem but I am stumped to know what it is.
