I changed a user's password on the server (SBS 2003 SP1). I then logged off and back on the client (with new password) and the windows xp loaded fine. However, even though i was logged on with new password when I tried to access My Documents, a pop up box asked for my username and password. I provided both and access was denied. I also tried the old password with no success.

When I tried to access a mapped network drive I was given an access is denied message. The only thing that worked was Outlook (Connected to Exchange), after I provided my new password and it was fine.

I have now had to go back to the old password. I logged on with chnaged password (back to old) and I have access to everything, My Docs, Network Drives and Outlook.

Any advice would be a great help.
    Cheers Griffmaster

Sounds like your changing it in the local policy instead of in the active directory.

in the Active Directory User and Computers, it gives me option to Rest password, not to change. I presume this is where the password needs to be changed? Any advice would be a great help.

Resetting the password is changing it.

I believe the system is set up this way so that it is not easy to read user's passwords, and also an Administrator does not have to know a users password to change it.

Select the option to reset the password. The password you enter will be the user's new password and will replace their previous password.

These items only move with you if you are using roaming profiles.

Out of the box, logging on to a computer with a network logon creates a new profile for the network user on that computer. Logging onto another as the same user creates another new profile on the second computer. The profiles are local to the computer, and the user's profile on one computer is not connected to the profile on the other.

When you enable roaming profiles, a master profile for the user is created on the server. When a user logs onto a new computer, the profile from the server is installed rather than a standard local profile.

I have not implemented roaming profiles as the I've not had a need for them, so I cannot give any advice on setting them up. However, have a look at this google search. It gives a lot of links to Microsoft articles on roaming profiles.

I do have roaming profiles enabled, but User1 only ever used this one PC to log onto (even though Roaming Profiles enabled, they have not been used yet).

I am confused as I created a new user (User2) and logged onto my PC with User2 and password I created on the server. Everything was fine. I changed the password for User2 on the server and logged onto my PC again with the new user and new password. Fine, everything worked fine.

It only seems to be when I change User1 password that things wont work. Would I be best to delete User1 and create it again? I tried to change the type of user profile on the XP PC that i am having problems with but it will not allow me to change the profile of User1 to Roaming, it is stuck on Local. Could this be the problem?

It could be a problem with that user profile, so deleting and recreating the user might well be the solution - especially if it is just this user having problems.

However, note that this user will get a new SID so will be a different user even if the username and password are the same as previously. This means that they will get a new profile on client PCs.
