Before I propose a course of action are you running XP with SP1 or SP2?

If you don't know Right click My Computer icon > Properties and look under System on the General tab.

A number of possible solutions ....

Disable all add-ons you have installed in Internet Explorer - see here ...

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/web/sp2_addonmanager.mspx

If the problem is resolved re-activate each add-on in turn until you find the one causing the problem.

Do you have the Yahoo Toolbar installed? If so uninstall it and see if the problem is resolved.

Repairing IE in XP SP2 is nigh on impossible, especially if SP2 was installed along with operating system rather than being installed later ....

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;318378

One way in which a re-install can be forced .....

In Windows Explorer go to Tools > Folder Options > View and check 'Show hidden files & folders'.

    Then navigate to ....

    C:\WINDOWS\inf\ie.inf

Right click on the ie.inf file and select install.
