Was having problems with Win98SE so I decided it was time to re-load. I did a Fdisk & format. It seems everything went well but win98 can't reconize the video adapter that I have been using for the last couple of years.Actually it does find the driver but when I hit accept it reports that I have to re-start my computer inorder for the new driver to be installed. When I re-start I get a Fatal Exception error at OD @ 031f:00005be7. If I don't re-start my computer I can only run in 16 color mode. If I go to the step by step mode it appears that everything is OK. Also going into devise manager it doesn't report an error. I am using Trident T9440 driver software with a PCI-bus VGA Accelerator video board. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Go on the www and download the latest driver for this video controller.

    Also the motherboard chipset.

Then boot to Safe mode and check the device manager for duplicate entries so open each entry. If any have dupes or more remove them all! You may see items in safe mode that were not there in full mode. These are usually the problems.

Also if there is an Unknown devices entry (look for yellow ?) then remove these also

"DO not do this in SYSTEM Devices "!

Then reboot to full and provide the new drivers for the video controller.

Only after you have installed the Video controller would you normally install the MotherBoard chipset drivers. But in some cases this is where the Video drivers will be. So consider this!

    Hi Mike:
No duplicate entries in device manager or yellow flags.
I did D/L the latest drives from Trident but had problem trying in install them. Seems like only the original disk works.Doesn't
appear to be any differences in the dates on old and new drivers anyway.
    Thanks for the quick reply.

    Hi Bob

In reply to your direct email.

You say if you do a step by step boot that you can get to a normal desktop, correct?

By normal the video resolution is correct?

Device mgr shows correct video controller?

If so this may be related to Directx.

So step by step to a normal desktop.

Then download and install DX9. From here:

    http://www.softrom.net/download.asp?id=1543&op=5

Bob I sure hope you have Broadband because this download is big, 32 megs. It will take hours on a modem.

But I think it may be your fix.

    Let me know.

    Hi Mike:
Just noticed your reply after I sent you the e-mail. Thank goodness I don't have to D/L that 32 meg file. It would take forever on my 42,000 line.
Everything seems to be working great at the present time but I can't get my hopes up too high because one thing I have learned about computers that you can never be sure what will happen the next time you turn it on.
    Thanks again for your help.
For those who have been following this thread, I'm not sure what was causing my problem. I found an old copy of my Trident software and that seems to have taking care of the problem.
I hate it when you solve a problem and aren't sure exactly what you did.
