I have an old win 98 machine that I want to connect to my wireless router.
I used to have it connected so I know that it can. Difference between then and now is that I have encrypted it with a passphrase and wep key (128).
I use a linksys wireless modem and card that have previously worked together.
I have gone to the device manager and disabled the wired card which is also on the computer. In the configuration, it asks for the ssid which I put in and the Passphrase and the key. I enter the passphrase I used to create the key and it creates a new key below. Passphrases are supposed to work in Win98.
I then click on connect and it makes contact with the modem but won't see the internet. When I use aol to try to look at my available networks, it sees my phone modem and a tcp/ip connection. When I click on the tcp/ip connection it can't connect to the internet. I have been to network connections and there is a tcp/ip connection for my wireless card and also one for my wired card but i have disabled my wired card in the device manager. Do I need to delete the tcp/ip connection? I never needed to before. This computer will connect to the internet with the wired card.

I also have tried entering the wep key in the passphrase area since you can't enter it directly in the wep key area because the wep key area is not case sensitive. This brings the same result ... I can make access with the modem but not get onto the internet. I have also made sure that "never dial a modem" is correctly configured in the connections of ie. Any ideas about what I'm doing wrong? I've been working on this a couple of days now and called linksys and got india and of course, their solution is to reinstall windows. I really don't think I need to. Any thoughts here?

    Thanks

Check your IP Configuration. Start > Run > Winipcfg. Then select MORE. Are you using a static IP config or DHCP? Check that the default gateway is the address of your Router. Check that you have an address for DNS.

I went to the IP config screen and it seemed to have all the right settings. So I clicked release all and then renew all. I got the message that the "DHCP server is unavailable. Renewing adapter" So I clicked ok but my default gateway did not reappear. How do I make the DHCP server available?

    Thanks

Is your router configured to act as a DHCP server? If not, set that up. If it is, then check your networking config on 98 to be sure it is set for obtaining an address automatically.

You might need some drivers (not likely) or maybe even remove TCP/IP, reboot and then re-install TCP/IP.

Router is configured as a DHCP server and networking is configured to select ip addresses automatically. However, the default gateway has nothing in it. How do I put the default gateway in?

The router should be inserting its address as the default gateway during the DHCP process. Check your documentation and also online at the manufacturer's support site.

It does on my other computers ... is there any way I can find this out besides winicfg? Winicfg indicates that it isn't there.

ok ... i tried installing the wireless card on ANOTHER win98 ... a Dell ... that I had around and it's doing the same thing. it connects to the wireless modem but won't see the internet. So it has something to do with win98. Any suggestions?

again ... it doesn't have any wired drivers or tcp/ip connections.

I tried disabling WEP on my wireless modem internet address ... and it works.
That means that I am doing something wrong when I am putting in the wep passphrase and key. I put in the passphrase that I chose and then i put in the key. The key is supposed to have numbers and lower case letters but the linksys program only lets me put in all caps and numbers. What am I doing wrong?

just found out that the 128 wep key has a real problem with win98, according to linksys. They advised that I upgrade to xp. So I think I will get a cheap xp laptop on ebay.

    Thanks for all your help.
