I recently built a new PC for home use. After getting my rig up and running I started my installation process of windows and other program files. I noticed last night that some of the pictures on my back up driv do not show up as thumbs. I deleted the thumbs.db file and changed my folder view to lise with no luck in repairing this problem. A folder with less than say 25 images will show all as a thumb. A folder with say 100 images will show 30 as thumbs then 20 as just a jpeg symbol with teh ramaining as a thumb looking icon with a blank white back ground. In addition to this some of the icons that normally appear on under start ie. My Docs, My COmputer, Help and support are not showing up. It will just have My Computer with no computer icon.

The next step in my plan provided I do not get different advice is to run a repair on windows and then re-install if that does not work.

System Specs if needed to give info:
    3.2 Pent 4
    ABIT GURU MB
    Gig DDR 400
Western Digital 10k RPM SATA (c: Drive)
Western Digital 7800 RPM IDE set to cable select (E: Drive)
    Radeon 9800 PRO
    Sony CDRW

Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Nuckle

Hi Nuckle - Welcome to the Board :)

Strange problem - could be a corrupted thumbnail cache. Suggest you take a look here - scroll down to Thumbnail, particularly Thumbnail View.

Alternatively, as you have a problem with other icons look here under Icons

    or

Download Tweak UI and try the Repair > Rebuild Icons option.

If none of these helps try a Repair of XP as you suggest.

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried them with no results. What I ended up doing with it being such a new install of the OS is using system restore I took it back to Sunday. This cured the problem. I will start installing software and reboot each time to see if it is software related. If the problem comes back I will post it here so that you guys may learn something new with me. It may not come back but who knows.

Thanks again for the reply. I will try and frequent the boards here and maybe one day I can return the favor.

    Thumbnail display problem

If you can't see jpg's or jpeg's in thumbnail mode, the registry entries for HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg (or .jpeg) registry key may have ended up changed or even deleted. This happened to me twice, already, and caused the thumbnail views to exclude jpg's in the Windows Explorer views.
Both keys typically contain identical entries (in my experience).

I used regedit to export the jpg key to a .reg file and this is what it looks like on my XP machine:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg]
    "PerceivedType "= "image "
    @= "jpegfile "
    "Content Type "= "image/jpeg "

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg\OpenWithList]

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg\OpenWithList\ois.exe]
    @=" "

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg\OpenWithProgids]
    "jpegfile "=hex(0):

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg\PersistentHandler]
    @= "{098f2470-bae0-11cd-b579-08002b30bfeb} "

Your entries may be different and still work. You may also try to change a jpg filename suffix to jpeg and see if a thumbnail appears for that file in the thumbnail display mode to see if one or the other displays as a thumbnail.

If you are at your wits end, regedit savvy, and want to try changing the registry key to the above WORKING key, copy the blue text into notepad, save the file with a .REG suffix and double click the resulting file to change the registry key.

    Good luck

If I am wrong then please say so.

I interpet the above to mean that you may have been installing software without rebooting.

I found out that this can be a NO-NO ( in all versions of Windows). I had similiar probelms and found that If I restarted after an install the problems did not show up.

If Windows is not re-started the installed software may not get what I believe is known as REGISTERED properly.

Another thing that I have found out is to not get in a hurry installing software. Wait awhile inbetween and allow Windows to be restarted a couple of times before going to the nest install. Believe me it is not time wasted.

Also what is running in the background can have and effect also. If something is running that is using a certain file that file may not get overwritten properly if it is in use. I have had both my Anti-Virus and Windows Firewall cause me problems. Turned them both off and the install went just fine.

Just like in driving an automobile " Getting in a hurry " can kill a commputer.
