Problem with Skype

I installed Skype some time ago and only recently needed to use it. After logging on and making a connection for one minute a Windows message appeared that said the program has stopped working and would be shut down.
I then uninstalled the old version and downloaded and installed the newer version of Skype but had the same problem.
I have checked for malware & viruses, firewall incompatibilities (I use Norton 360), used MS Fix It to run a troubleshoot for Explorer, dowloaded some Windows updates, did a Registry defrag, and all turned out negative.
One suggestion I read was to replace IE9 with IE8 which I think was installed when I first installed Skype.
Does anyone have any other suggestions or ideas as to why this problem remains unresolved?

Friend of mine uses it and I know he has IE9.

 

i had the same problem with skype about a month ago. the skype 5.7 beta version works for me. get it here:

Thank you eisneun, for the suggestion and the link. I uninstalled the version I had and installed the Beta and did a voice and vision check. It worked perfectly but I will know better tomorrow when I call my daughter in Switzerland! I'll let you know how it goes.
