somehow on my machine I have lost the right click ability to end to desktop (create shortcut) .
I can still choose the other objects like floppy or either of my hard drives.
How can I get the send to desktop option back . this pc has several user profiles and we usually share programs although all desktops are separate,so as you can see we need the ability to create desktop shortcuts.
My Os is win 98 if that has any relavance
    thanks in advance

I'd say that you have run a powertoy "Send to X" or a registry cleaner recently.

Either way, I suggest that you check these:

Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Windows Explorer or Windows NT Explorer.
On the View menu, click Folder Options (or Options). On the View tab, click to clear the Hide file extensions for known file types (or Hide MS-DOS file extensions for file types that are registered) check box, and then click OK.
In Windows 95/98, navigate to the Windows\SendTo folder, and in Windows NT navigate to the Winnt\Profiles\<username>\SendTo folder, where <username> is the name you use to log on to Windows NT.
On the File menu, point to New, and then click Text Document. Type "Desktop as Shortcut.DESKLINK" (without quotation marks), and then press ENTER.
Click Yes, and then quit Windows Explorer or Windows NT Explorer.

If that is slready correct, then you could try checking these registry keys:

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.DeskLink]
    @= "CLSID\\{9E56BE61-C50F-11CF-9A2C-00A0C90A90CE} "

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\CLSID\{9E56BE61-C50F-11CF-9A2C-00A0C90A90CE}]
    "NeverShowExt "=" "
@= "Shortcut to Desktop PowerToy "

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\CLSID\{9E56BE61-C50F-11CF-9A2C-00A0C90A90CE}\InProcServer32]
    @= "C:\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM\\SENDMAIL.DLL "
    "ThreadingModel "= "Apartment "

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\CLSID\{9E56BE61-C50F-11CF-9A2C-00A0C90A90CE}\DefaultIcon]
    @= "C:\\WINDOWS\\EXPLORER.exe,3 "

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\CLSID\{9E56BE61-C50F-11CF-9A2C-00A0C90A90CE}\shellex]

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\CLSID\{9E56BE61-C50F-11CF-9A2C-00A0C90A90CE}\shellex\DropHandler]
    @= "{9E56BE61-C50F-11CF-9A2C-00A0C90A90CE} "

    Hope that those help.
