I can open an attachment by clicking on the paper clip.
If I open the mail then I cannot open the attachment by clicking on it. OPerating system is XP, computer is a fast Dell and it is using broadband.

    John11 - Welcome to the Board :)

In Outlook Express check out Tools > Options > Security and ensure that 'Do not allow attachments ....' is not checked. The default setting is checked.

If that does not resolve the problem post back.

    Outlook Express

The problem was on a PC used by an elderly gentleman. It took me 6 hours to sort it out, missing passwords, use of both Freeserve and Broadband, a complete mess but now it is all working.
    Many thanks for you assistance.

murphy2006--Are you opening the attachment by clicking on the paper clip? Or just the email message? (Do you see anything different when you click on the message name in the Inbox list vs. clicking on the paperclip?)
If only the message, what happens when you click on the attachment?
Does it offer to Open (or Save)? What happens when you click Open?
If it does not open, right click on the attachment|Properties. On the General tab, what is entered in the "Type of File" line?

So what is the name of the attachment? The problem seems to be that you don't have a program to open it with.

    Outlook Express attachment problem

The problem was on a aged gentlemans PC which frankly was in a mess. I overcame the attachment problem by reducing the security level. However it will only run correctly using Outlook Express, not Yahoo Broadband set Outlook Express. On my home PC I just use Outlook Express and log on to Internet Explorer provided by BT Broadband.
Incidentally, I was unable to pick a new restore point on the gentlemans Dell PC, the Dell technical desk advised that this was quite normal and not to worry as one would be created automatically !!! worrying, I can create one at any time on my home PC but must say that it is unreliable when a restore is attempted.
