I have been using Netscape 7.1 e-mail with no problems for over a year. This morning when I tried to check my mail I got an error saying that I couldn't connect to the incoming mail server. I called my ISP and they weren't experiencing any problems on their end and I am able to access my mail via webmail so it is for sure a problem with Netscape. I read a past post on this site where you told the person to check their proxy setting. Mine is set to read mail directly so presumably that isn't the problem. Does anyone have any other ideas as to what has gone wrong?

I have downloaded Netscape 7.2 and am ready to install it to see if that will solve the issue. If I have to do this will all of my old messages and settings be automatically brought along?

    Thanks!

    Chopski,

Welcome to the board! I do not have an answer for you, but I do have a suggestion. If you upgrade to 7.2, I would go with a clean install. Back up your user profile, uninstall 7.1, and then install 7.2. You will be happier with the results. You can find the instructions for that here.

Just don't try to go to NS7.2 without uninstalling 7.1 first, cleanly or not.
You may be better off installing 7.2 in a different folder, and create a new profile for 7.2 use only. Then set up your account like you have been having it before. If things work, then one can say that something may have happened. If not, there is something wrong with the set up. ISPs have been making changes, of late, in the name of security, etc, but mostly causing problems, if the user is not aware of the changes.
To summarize, the simplest approach is to remove the account, and then create a new one. The old folders can be copied later.
Slightly more complicated is to create a different profile for another versions.
And, I always set up in Outlook Express, because the vast majority of ISPs are clueless about Netscape/Mozilla. I never use OE, other than for comparison.
I expect it to work, and the same goes for IE. And, there is nothing more satisfying than finding out that the ISP is wrong (it happened to me once when I was told that the Netscape set up would not work. OE would not work either, with their instructions). Good luck.

    Welcome to the Forum, Chopski!

    Chopski,

Before uninstalling Netscape try disabling your AntiVirus email scanner, if you have one enabled. That is often the problem when unable to connect to the server.

If that makes no difference, if you have a Firewall, disable the Firewall, and see if that enables you to connect to the server. You may have some settings that need to be changed.

Let us know if this helps.

If you are using AT&T as your mail server, they are having some problems right now with the tabs on their homepage and their webmail.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Just to address a few of them:

I can't use Outlook Express as it has a bug that results in endless error messages. My ISP is Telus and they are a great ISP and when I spoke with them they told me they hadn't changed anything and that nobody else had complained. Telus suggested that I disable my Norton anti-virus and to make sure that it wasn't set to check incoming or outgoing emails and I did that and it made no difference.

I will try the other suggestions and let you know what happens.

What worked? But, if it is the AntiVirus, I am not surprised. I gave up on Norton in 1999, and I keep hearing that the new version has fixed the problem. Nah!
