    Hello,
When I attempt to add a new dial up connection, I get a no modem installed message. Following prompts, I'm unable to install my modem.

I check control panel/system/devices and everything looks fine. Modem diagnostics seem fine, but under devices, ports...I only see comm 1 and a printer port.

I have tried uninstalling the modem I'm shown as having and allowed w98 to detect and install it. Supposedly installed fine and diagnostics say its there on comm 2.

So, going back to adding a dial up connection, it shows no modem and tries to install one but will only check comm1 (there is no option for me to insist the wizard look at comm2).

What do I do? Everything was working perfectly until some rogue program wiped out a lot of things including my ability to use printers on my home network. I have checked for viruses and have run SpyBot which I used to clean things up when I first had some problems.

Help! How do I get comm 2 to show up as even being in existence withing control panel/system/devices?

Any suggestions short of a bonfire will be appreciated.

    Thanks and yes I'm,

    tired

    Welcome....

Remove both the physical modem, and it's software via the Control Panel. Reboot at least once to let Win know there is no modem onboard.
Go into your machine's BIOS by 'Press -something- to Enter Setup' when it boots. Disable both the COM1 and the COM2 ports. Reboot. The machine and/or Windows should reassign the appropriate hardware to the appropriate IRQ... Reinstall the modem and it's software.
An established Win install usually likes COM5 for a new modem for some reason or another, most Winmodems don't like that...

    Good Luck

Thanks for the reply. I went into setup but never found anything about comm 1 or 2 so that I could disable them.

Tried many reboots removing the modem physically and through control panel as well as removing the internal modem and installing an external modem to comm 1.

Windows98 always detects the original modem and the external modem and installs them but whenever I attempt to add a new dial up connection, I'm met with the same error...modem is not installed. I reinstall but no go.

I think I'm just plain out of luck.

Hi Tired- Modems can really be a pain. I had a similar problem and here's what worked for me: I removed the external modem in Device Manager and rebooted. When Windows detected it and tried to install the driver for it, I pressed cancel. I then ran the software that came with the modem and it worked just fine! I then went back into Device Manager and disabled the internal modem and the modem enumerator. I couldn't remove the internal modem as it is a combo modem/sound card. Anyhow, it might work for you, give it a try. Best of luck. Clydeo22.

Look in the BIOS under Integrated Peripherals; the COM ports are refered to as Serial Ports.
Have you tried removing all traces of the modem software and any dial-up connections and starting from there?
What kind of modem? Do you have the most recent drivers?

After you remove the modem from the device manager shut down the computer. Unplug the computer. Physically move the modem to another slot! Windows likes to detect the modem on bootup!
