I have a Compaq Presario 1200 XL-118 with Win98se installed from the factory. I have just re-installed the settings and all as it was from the factory from the restore feature on the computer. I am trying to get the computer to recongize the ethernet card so I can connect to the internet. The first thing I have done after restoring the computer is to shut it down, then inserting the Linksys "Etherfast 10/100 PC Card" (model number PCMPC100) in hopes that Windows98 would "see" the card and then I could install the driver. (This is a brand new card just bought yesterday) When Windows "sees" the card it starts to load its own Drivers and then it gets to about 90% loaded and then I get an error message.

A fatal exception OE has occurred at 0028:c02B5E51 in VXD IOS(04) + 00000EC5

Can someone please advise as what to do at this point? Thanks in advance!

Thanks Dennis for your quick reply. Unfortunately there are no files on my computer named "sb16.vxd" (without the quotes), so that fix isn't gonna work. Does anyone have any other ideas?

Thanks again Dennis for your 2nd reply! I looked at them all, and not a one applied to me, and I even read most of the answers just to make sure. I know that this install of Win98 is real solid and all files are there, I just can't seem to get past this "fatal error ". Anybody had any similar problems with Linksys PCMICA Cards?

You probably need to install the drivers before attaching the card.

I would (take out the card) boot into Safe Mode and remove anthing listed for Network Adapters. Reboot into normal Windows. Run the driver installation program. Shutdown. Attach the card. Restart and then Windows should be able to install the drivers.

Yes, as Mattman said above and also - use the Linksys drivers that came on the CD. This problem probably could have been avoided if you had read the quick install guide that came with this hardware. Believe it even has pictures for those of us that don't like reading.

Thanks mattman and Rockster2U for your quick replys. I have removed the Linksys ethernet card from the "network adapters" in Device Manager about 50 times now (while in Safe Mode) and then have rebooted into Windows and tried to get this computer to "see" the Linksys EtherFast 10/100 PC Card, but it never does. So now I have just tried the Restore feature Compaq gave me for this computer and re-installed the computer again to its original factory condition. I even had to type in my name and set the time zone and all....so now there is no way that this card or any part of it can be on the computer.I previously had done what the instructions told me to.....insert the card with the cable (dongle) attached to the card and with the RJ 45 cord attached to that and to the cable modem and then started Windows98 up. It then would recgonise the card and install its own drivers and then I would get the "fatal error" (see above). So what I have done is to do what mattman said to do, but when I insert the floppy with the drivers on it, there is no way to execute it. There are lots of files on this floppy, and one says "Win98" so I opened it up and there is a "read me" file that says to insert the floppy andd then to insert the PC Card and Windows will find it and install the files. Well, it does that , but thats when that error occurs.
I wonder if there is a conflict with the "dial up adapter(modem) that is there in the Device Manager? The instrustions said that if I have to "start over" to remove everything in Network Properties that says Linksys, but to NOT remove Microsoft Client or the TCP/IP for Dial up Adapter nor the Dial Up adapter. Can you have both Dial Up and Cable on this computer at the same time?
Thanks again for all of your alls help with this!!

An IRQ conflict is a very real possibilty but your machine should be able to handle both a modem and an ethernet PCMCIA card. You may also have to run the MS Skip Driver Agent because Windows may now have you locked out of any drivers (correct ones) for that card. Unfortunately I don't have a 98 machine around here to locate the path to that tool and its not a common one. Might be available though the tabbed tools section on the System Information (msconfig) page - just can't remember. You can also check the port configuration re: the port your device is trying to use.

The Automatic Skip Driver Agent is in Start>Accessories>System Information>Tools(menu) (new to me :) ).

Windows can install drivers several different ways. Can you divert Windows from installing it's own drivers (standard drivers)? Do you get an opportunity to select the drivers from the "list" or can you browse to the drivers on the floppy disk?

If the floppy disk does not have a setup executable (.exe) file, see if there is an ".inf" file for Win98. Right-click on the .inf file and select Install. That will make the card's model appear in the list of selectable hardware. Windows will then be able to recognize and install the correct drivers when you select your model from the list.

Check what drivers are available at the Linksys website:
http://www.linksys.com/download/ (if you are in the USA)
There may a bug in your drivers. As I said, I would try to get the drivers installed before connecting the card.

Rockster may be right about it being a resource problem. You can change the resources it uses in Device Manager>Properties (for the card), but that will be a compromise, I would return the card for another if you still can.

It may go further up the line of drivers. Check for updated motherboard/chipset drivers or reinstall from your motherboard CD.

Thanks Rockster2U and mattman for your replys! I have removed the Com port 1 (in Device Manager) and rebooted and Windows installed it again from the files it had, so there is no problem with the Com port that I know of. I did get a driver from the Linksys web site and ran it on my computer first before trying to install the ethernet card and when Windows booted up it found the card and installed the drivers and then I got the same "fatal error" I always get. I have made it to the point where it has the "fatal error ", then I have to shut it down and then restart, then I go to Hardware Wizzard and install it from there and it gets installed okay! I then go to Network and add the card to the "properties " window and get the TCP/IP to point to the "Linksys EtherFast 10/100 PCMCIA v.2" card and then I set up the configuration I need ( as told by my Internet Provider) and apply that and click on OK and then I go to "System" and click on "Device Manager" and it has a Yellow Exclimation Point in front of the "Linksys Ethernet 10/100 Card ", so I highlight that and select properties and it tells me to "Update the Drivers ", so I try to do that and it gets 97% through and fails and says Windows has Failed to Install this Device ". I have repeated this senario at least 20 times and it is always the same. I just dont know if this card is gonna work on this computer or not. I looked for BIOS updates but was unable to find any, so I will keep trying in hopes that it will finally catch and hold the card at some point. I have to work this weekend, so I will post back with any results after this weekend. Thanks again for all the help!!

Oh yeah, forgot to tell you...I tried the Automatic Skip File Manager a few times and it tells me that there are "No Files to Skip "...so that didn't work either.

Yarddog - time to bury that bone and go buy a new piece of marrow. I'd return that puppy and get a different mfg. brand of card.

Always have liked Linksys myself but just replaced (4th one) a linksys wireless router that didn't want to throw much of a signal with a D-Link that works like a champ. Tried 2 linksys 802.11b routers, then added a linksys range extender, then tried an 802.11g, then finally threw in a D-Link. Mission accomplished. Still not sure what the problem was or why but could pick up stronger signals from 2 neighbors than this guys own router and its one acre zoning in his neighborhood.

All of my own stuff is Linksys but I've had a couple of problem locations and after going through anything and everything at these locations - it was time to find a hound willing to hunt. Suggest you do the same.

    ;)
