My pc crashed and now when it boots it automatically runs a setup program that wants to revert internet explorer version 5 to the old version 4.
I ran it and it reverted my ie5 to ie4. and then outlook express would not run.
I then installed ie5.5 and same problem, setup to revert back to the olde ie4 started automatically. If I click cancel, no problem everything works OK.
How do I prevent the setup program from running?
I have checked my startup menu and there appears to be no entry there?
    I am running windows 95 on a 166 pentium.
    Thanks in advance
    Steve:confused:

You appear to be suffering from an installation that never got completed. Check this article for a solution.BTW I would skip IE5 and go straight to 5.5.
Go to your address bar and type:- mskb Q221863
Easier paste into address bar.(sorry I don't have the link)

    signmaster,

I don't want to disagree with jenae, but I feel that I must state my past experience of upgrading IE. You can be the judge of what you want to do about yours.

I went directly from 4.0 to 5.5 once & it messed up my computer real bad. I couldn't get IE to work worth a flip. It had all kinds of errors popping up all of the time, all over the place. Illegal operations galore & just about any error you could think of. I tried all kinds of fixes, but to no avail. I then tried reverting back to 4.0 & it got even worse. I had to finally re-format to straighten it out.

Only after I had gone through all of this, did I discover an article by Microsoft that warned against upgrading directly from 4.0 to 5.5. That you should go to 5.0 first, & then to 5.5.

    Hello Deloris and Signmaster,

I should have made myself clearer, I mean to imply that IE5.5 is a better version than IE5. And Deloris is right it is better to upgrade from IE5 to IE5.5. Better still is to uninstall IE altogether and download IE5.5 as a clean install. To do that download IEradicator from this site:-

Thanks for all the help, I didn't want to do a clean install or any think that takes a lot of work as I am going to retire the computer soon.
I looked for the IE setup program and renamed the setup.exe file and all appears to run OK now. Sound like a funny way to fix the problem but as I don't think I want to revert back ti IE4 it should not be too much of a problem.
    Again thanks for the help.
    Stephen

Kinda clever solution, signmaster. Can you expand a little more on what exactly you did, What did you rename the setup.exe file to?

Actually it was the directory that I renamed, I was going to rename the file but changed my mind and renamed the directory.
    C:/Program Files/Internet Explorer/Setup
    Renamed to
    C:/Program Files/Internet Explorer/old-setup

Don't know what it done but it sure has fixed the problem.
