When I got a new hard drive (Seagate 200gb internal drive) I copied everything from my original drive onto the new one then made the new one the master drive. Everything is fine (as far as I can tell) except for the icons. Many of my icons are showing up wrong or just not at all! Here are some examples of what I mean.

Icons not showing at all (just showing a blank box):http://img280.imageshack.us/img280/2995/bigproblem9ey.png
    Wrong icon....?: http://img252.imageshack.us/img252/8490/2ndbigproblem5oo.png

I know this is a pretty trivial problem, but it will bug me until I fix it/figure out what is wrong, and if anyone can help me I would be so happy. :D

Have you checked that all the programs showing a generic ('blank') icon actually work?

If they do you need to rebuild your icon cache. The safest way to do this is outlined in this post ....

It would not harm to do the same for the Administrator account.

To be on the safe side backup IconCache.db before deletion.

Well I did exactly what was in your post on both my account and the Admin account, but it is still messed up. And I checked the programs with the 'blank' icon and they do still work.

One thing I did notice before I rebuilt my cache, some video clips I had that were .mpg showed the windows media player icon, but when I double clicked on it to play it it would open up in Irfanview. I went to the properties and it was set to play in Irfanview, so I changed it to windows media player, which changed the icon from the WMP icon to the one the rest of mine are in (see the 2nd picture in my first post). I changed it back to Irfanview and this time the icon turned into a little winamp sign that it would show if winamp was the default. Also, I use WinRAR to open zipped files, but instead of the .zip files showing the WinRAR book icon, it is showing the default WinZIP icon.

Out of interest uninstall Ad-Aware 6 - that is way out of date now and download and install Ad-Aware SE (through Quicklinks in my signature) and see if it shows the right icon.

The fact that you copied one drive to another worries me slightly - suggest you run System File Checker ....

Start > Run > type in sfc /scannow - note the space before the / and have your XP CD handy. SFC will run and exit without any closing dialogue. To see which files, if any, were replaced look in Event Viewer.

I ran the System file Checker but if it did anything, I can't tell.

And I've been using Ad-aware SE Personal for a while now, not even sure why I still had Ad-aware 6 :)

I'm fairly sure that this problem has been covered - not necessarily solved - in a past thread, but I can't locate it :(

The only fresh suggestion I have is to Repair XP.

Well, thanks for trying. Im glad to know this isn't something only I could have managed to do. I think I'll just go ahead and format and start out on a clean slate, I've been wanting to recently but I needed a reason, and here it is.

    This may or may not be relevant but;

How did you do the copying ?

If by some chance you did it from within Windows that may ( or may not ) be the reason for some problems.

I copied a 40gig with C: thru H: to an 80gig ( using DOS ) but I DID NOT allow the first boot of the new drive to go directly to Windows. I booted to the floppy and re-installed Windows. ( 98SE at the time ).

I have since upgraded to XP Pro and no problems.

The original 40gig is now in another machine. But I also booted to the floppy and reinstalled 98SE there also. No problems.

I just used the copying program that was on the disk that came with the harddrive. I don't know how it was done though because my dad did that part. I'm guessing he just followed the instructions that come with the HD.
