I bought a new Dell Computer not too long ago and ever since, I have a particular problem using email links. When I go to a site and it reads "Email Us" or something similar, a window comes up saying "no program associated with this" or something to that effect. It does tell me to go into the control panel, default programs, and select the program you wish to use. When I go there, I can't find anything related and/or I don't know what I'm looking for as much of this is abbreviated. I'm sure hoping someone can help me out, it's getting to be frustrating. I'm using Windows 7, 64bit, and Internet Explorer as my browser if it matters. I'm also thinking the app titled "Associate a file type or protocol with a specific program" might be the one I need but I don't see anything labeled email in there either.
    Thanks

Which email application are you using for regular emails?

I'm using Yahoo Mail or it may be called AT&T Yahoo Mail.

You're probably going to have to install an email application like MS Outlook or Thunderbird to be able to do online email...Windows Live Email might maybe work too.

Sorry about the double post. I wasn't sure if the original post was in the right spot. I believe this is only my second post. To answer your suggestion; then I'm wondering why this worked before with my old computer. I used the same email account as I am now.

Your old computer was most likely XP ? XP has a default email app - Outlook Express.

Windows 7 has no default email app.

Yes, I did have XP but my mail app (Yahoo mail) is the same now as it was back then.
I also have a hotmail account which I rarely use and that email window never came up either when I click a link like "email us" or "email ". Now I know why I hate getting a new computer. Everything works great and then the new computer comes along and here we go again.

Do you recall if the Outlook Express or Yahoo Mail window opened when you clicked an 'Email us' link?

I understand that Yahoo Mail is based and is not therefore installed on your computer, but accessed through the Web. Default programs are those installed on the computer.

I'm in agreement with Steve in that I too think you need an email client on the computer - Windows Live Mail is the MS offering.

I use Outlook and can't really comment further.

The Yahoo Mail opened I believe. I do have Windows Live installed (Hotmail) and that didn't come up either. Maybe I should try installing Outlook and see what happens. Thanks

First I would go to Control Panel > Default Programs > Set Default Programs and look to see if Windows Mail is set as default (or Yahoo, but I doubt that is listed as it is a web app, AFAIK).

If Windows Mail is installed installing Outlook will make no difference, IMHO - you already have a mail client installed.

Thanks, I looked in the default programs and the others shown in that window and I don't see any AFAIK. It's crazy because in the one app it says for email use current email program. I just don't know why I can't do this when I've did it before on the old computer. I sure wish I knew more about this stuff. I contacted Dell about it and I never even got an answer. Probably because it's not really their problem. I just thought I'd get a hold of a geek and he could help me. Oh well. Thanks for the suggestion anyway.

When you look in Default programs do you not see Windows Live Mail listed? - screenshot showing Outlook which I use.

Are you sure that you have Windows Live Mail installed?

I'm limited in terms of advice by the fact that I do not use any Windows Live applets.

You could try downloading another email client, such as Mozilla Thunderbird and installing it, letting it set itself as your default email program.

It's particularly important that you allow it to set itself as your default email client as it should then go through the correct procedure to establish itself thus.

I fixed it. All I needed to do was install the Yahoo toolbar and that app allowed me to select the Yahoo mail program as my default. Thanks for all the help.

Well done - would never have thought of that as a solution :)
