I just bought a DVD Burner with Lightscribe from Newegg.com and when I put it in my computer everything worked right until I tried to burn a DVD. When I put a DVD in my DVD Burner for some reason Windows thinks it is a CD Rom drive and when I take out the DVD disc it goes back to saying that it is a DVDRAM drive. Could someone please let me know what might be going on here?

BTW, I have Windows XP SP2.

Also the DVD Burner is a Lite-On DVDRW LH-20A1H is that helps
it is a 20X Burner drive with lightscribe which should be able to handle my 16X disc with no problem.

If this is your first DVD burner, you need DVD burning software (XP has no native DVD burning software). If a CD came with burner, check for a free OEM version of Nero you could install.
If you previously could burn DVD's, try the following ...
Check your new burner for latest Firmware update.
Try different brand of DVD blanks. Generally Verbatim DVD's are good quality.

I have Nero 7 on my computer right now so I should be able to burn the DVDs. I have also tried different DVD brands and they still do not work. Also I tried updating my firmware but when I try it says that I already have the updated version.

Another thing is that I have two DVD drives hooked up. The newer one is set to master and the other is set to slave. The jumpers are correct and should be set up right.

Also, when I go into the My Computer Icon under type on the DVD drives they both say CD Drives....is there anyway to fix this?

Can you see both drives in Windows Explorer? If so, they are listed as what?
If you put recorded DVD disk in will it be read? Can Windows Explorer see any data on it?

Yes I can see both drives in Windows Explorer and if I put a disc in them they will read what is on it. They just mess up when I put a blank disc in. That is when they turn to read CD ROM drive for the drive name but they always read CD Drive on the type (if you look in detail view).

Do you have same problem with both drives?
    I would suggest two things:
    1. Download Nero CD-DVD Speed to test both drives. If everything checks out, then.
    2. Uninstall both drives. Shut down. Physically disconnect your not-original burner. Restart, and let Windows find a driver. I'd start with just Windows driver, not manufacturer one.

OK I tried the Nero CD-DVD Speed and when I put in an 8X DVD is worked fine, recording a speed of 8X. When I put in the 16X it gives this error message:

Cannot simulate with this type of disc.
Please use the Create Data Disc function to measure the write performance.

This is at least a 20X DVD burner...it is brand new...so it should be able to use the 16X discs. I don't know what is going on but do any of you know what might be happening?

Are you using DVD+R by any chance?

DVD+Rs do not support simulation in general, and it may be your primary problem with burning.
Get some DVD-R, and give it a try.

So what are DVD+R supposed to be used for if you cannot burn with them....even if I can burn with a DVD-R (which I am trying to do right now) why does Windows still show the DVD Burner as a CD Drive?

    so which one is it?
From a market point of view, it looks like DVD+Rs became less compatible, then DVD-Rs.

Ok...I think we or I am getting confused...

I bought a new DVD Burner and installed it into my computer.

The computer says it is DVDRAM Drive (G:)

When I put any kind of writable DVD in the drive it says that it is a CD Drive.

Using the Details list it also says CD Drive in the Type field.

When I try to burn to a DVD+R disc it does not work but it does seem to work with a DVD-R disc.

I don't know why Windows keeps on changing the drive name and I don't know why (technically) the DVD+R discs do not work. That is why I came here.
