I have XP, when I run my system restore it runs properly and then reboots like it is supposed to, but then I get the message that my system was not able to be restored. I have tried this in safe mode and regular mode. Any suggestions as to the problem and what I might can do ?

    Thanks,

Sys Restore will only work if there are changes to the OS, not any software functions. Sometimes it will tell you it was unable to restore simply because there was nothing to turn back. Why are you trying to do a restore? What is the original problem?

I did some registry changes, and also added a program called RightClickMP3 (which appears to be a piece of junk that messed up my right click display items). The registry changes worked fine. Since then I have installed a program that someone suggested on here called Open Expert which corrected the problems caused by RightClickMP3. Now I am still wondering why my restore wouldnt work. I am glad that Open Expert fixed the problems but need to know how I can get my restore to work. Oh also I had uninstalled Microsoft's JVM and added JAVA. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Just to start with the simple:
go to control panel, system, system restore
then make sure it is turned on, and, below, that the drives you want to monitor are turned on.

Then go to run, msconfig, services. Scroll a little over halfway down and make sure the system restore box is ticked.

    Johanna,

I checked both and confirmed that they were both turned on. I have the disk space allotment to the maximum as well.

    Thanks,

    Tar Heel:

Check the event logs to investigate System Restore service errors:

Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Performance and Maintenance.

Click Administrative Tools, click Computer Management, double-click Event Viewer, and then click System.

Click the Source tab to sort by name, and then look for "sr" or "srservice." Double-click each of these services, and then evaluate the event description for any indication of the cause of the problem.

    Hey Rod,

I did as you suggested. There were two error msgs under "srservice" as follows:

A restoration to "System Checkpoint" restore point failed. No changes have been made to the system.

A restoration to "Installed Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.0_03" restore point failed. No changes have been made to the system.

As I tried the system restore several times the errors occurred more than once.

    Thanks,

    Tar Heel

    Tar Heel:

O.K. let's try this. Make a manual restore point and then shut your system off, and bring it back up. Then start System Restore again and see if it will allow you to restore the manual point you created.
