I'm having a problem upgrading to Windows XP(Home) from Windows Me. During install, it gets through the list of procedures, then on the last one, "finalizing installation ", it flashes a light blue screen and restarts my computer. It restarts, then there's a message on the screen, "select OS to start" with two options: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition or cancel Win XP setup. if i select "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" it'll go back to the installation screen and then it says "setup is being restarted ". The installation starts over and gets to "finalizing installation" and the same process starts over again. I've let it go and restart several times thinking that install might just take longer than any others i've seen, but after 2 hours of of waiting, i figured there was a problem ;)

i've tried installing after a clean boot, my BIOS is up to date(i think-phoenix ROM BIOS PLUS v1.10 A06), and i've scanned my computer for viruses, all to no avail.

I'm out of ideas and at the end of my rope with this one. Anyone know how I can get XP to install? Thanks in advance.

my system: P4 1300MHZ-80 gig HD-384 MB of ram

    zigz85 - Welcome to the Board :)

You may find an answer here .... Never ending setup loop

Your other option is to perform a clean install of XP bearing in mind that this involves a format of the drive and that everything on it will be lost. You will need to back up all your data, etc and check that you have all your program CD's to hand.

As you already have an install of XP on your drive, albeit not finalized you should follow the procedure outlined below ....

    Reinstall Windows XP

Check in your BIOS that the boot order is set CD/Floppy/HD

Boot from the Windows XP CD "“ follow the on screen prompts "¦..

To set up Windows XP now press ENTER

    Accept the Licence Agreement F8

Searching for previous versions of Windows

To continue installing a fresh copy of Windows without repairing press ESC

Ensure that the drive/partition selected is the one on which XP was set up and press D to delete the selected partition.

To delete the partition press ENTER

To delete the partition press L "“ heed the warnings and DOUBLE CHECK before hitting L

To create a partition in the unpartitioned space press C

Accept max size and press ENTER

To set up Windows XP on the selected item (Partition (New Raw)) press ENTER
Format the partition using the NTFS file system "“ preferred unless you want an install of Win 98 to access data on the drive/partition, if so choose FAT.

    Set up is formatting "¦â€¦

When format is complete XP will install.

When complete install your antivirus and firewall before you even think of connecting to the Internet. Update the virus definitions immediately and then go to Windows Updates and download the Critical updates.
