If I try to shut down MSN Messenger 5, it gives me an error saying it can't be shut down because Internet Explorer and Outlook Express are running. The thing is, they're not running. Is there a setting in Messenger I can change so I can just shut it down w/o worrying about whether IE and OE are running?

I'm gonna assume you never use it. If so, you can go to start, run, type "msconfg" without the quotes. Go to "startup" tab, uncheck "Msmsgs ".
    Or:
Try this thread. See if this helps.
