I have been having trouble with erratic boot sequences in XP Home SP3. Mostly, this is solved by installing UPHClean. I get the problem once a fortnight instead of twice a day. :D

However, I would like to back up the profile files
    Ntuser.dat
    Ntuser.dat.log
    Ntuser.ini.

The system does not like them being copied because they are in use. My problem is that, I suspect, if they weren't in use my computer would be turned off and I wouldn't be able to copy them anyway.

Does anyone have a solution for backing up these files.
    Thanks

Can't say that I'd worry about backing them up...But you can take the drive out of the pc and slave it to another computer or put it in an external USB case.

There are tools that can help you do that but it may be more than you want to attack since you list beginner as your level of experience.

If you want to try, I recommend HoboCopy since I have used it with success but I suspect a Google search may turn up others that are equal.

    Thanks, fellas.

I get the impression that backing those file up will not achieve anything, so I'll let it lie.
