    Win 98se - NS 7.0 (compact ver)

    Having problems opening one particular site (requires password).

    The site opens in IE 6.0 correctly but does not work in NS 7. I believe that the problem is in the site, not my set-up. The site may have been setup to work only with IE and they are unwilling to adjust thier end to accomodate NS. I think I read someplace that the "user agent string" may have some bearing on this, and if so can I "fake" it out by adjusting my "user agent" to indicate that I am using IE ?

    If this is possible, exacly what do I put in the user.js file to indicate that I am using IE ? (I am not AT ALL familiar with IE)

    Thanks to all for any assistance.

    regards

    I have one here that I use from time to time, which you can add to the user.js or prefs.js file. N7 must be closed to add to the prefs.js file.

    user_pref( "general.useragent.override ", "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1) ");

    (running IE6.0 on winXP)

    You can also try this one

    user_pref( "general.useragent.override ", "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:0.9.4) Gecko/20011022 Netscape6/6.2 ");

    (N6.2 on win2000)

    However, I do not advocate running around saying you are IE all the time. An alternative might be the following.

    http://www.xulplanet.com/downloads/prefbar/

    or if that fails...

    If you use IE as your user agent and have java installed on your system, when you shutdown the browser, it will not restart. This is a known bug, that is related in how java reports itself to the browser.

    If the browser ID's itself as IE, then Java tries to use a set of parameters that Netscape/Mozilla does not understand, causing it to not start properly.

    Thanks Brooks. I don't use java with Moz/N7 here, so I overlooked that problem.

    captjlddavis,

    Additionally, you have the annoyance of having to close the browser to change the useragent unless you use one of the addons mentioned...

    Your welcome Tranquilo.

    I use the Useragent toolbar personally, and have found that the 6.2 option works well for most sites.

    They also have an option for a 4.7 version also.

    Brooks & Tranquilo

    Many thanks to both. I will will look into your suggestions. The Prefbar looks promising.

    Thanks again
