    Howdy,

Netscape 7.0, then 7.1 reported import errors during migration of mail file directories. Some directories are not making it. (There are a ton of directories and subdirectories in my 4.77 mail directory!).

    Also message search fails.

Checked the threads on this website. Not sure this error specifically was addressed. Would like some help on this.

    Process to date:
Copied the Netscape Users directory from old machine to a safe backup location on new XP machine. Then copied the new XP machine safe backup copy of the users directory to c:\program files\netscape on the new XP machine.

Next I installed Communicator 4.77 on the new XP machine and pointed it at the c:\program files\netscape\users\richard_j_lanier\Mail.
Net result. Netscape Communicator 4.77 was very happy and appears to run just great.

However... not so with Netscape 7.0.

On the first try, I tried to import Communicator 4.77 files using the 7.0 import tool. When I tried to do a search, the search hung up and 7.0 essentially crashed. It was at that point, that I found out that not all the directories had made it to 7.0.

I uninstalled Netscape 7.0 and then installed 7.1
using NSSetup from internet. During the upgrade, Netscape sensed that the communicator package was there and automatically imported the files. However a pop-up box displayed indicated that there was an error trying to create directories in 7.1. 23 problem mail directories were listed in the pop-up box.

Also there was a duplicate communicator 4.77 directory nested within the imported mail directories.

Not sure what to do next. Have scanned the threads. Copying a myriad of directories/sub-directories without the snm files... would be awfully time consuming...

I did use the same user name in 7.0 and 7.1 as used in 4.77. Could that be the problem?

    Much Thanks!

Welcome to the Forum, Joel Lanier!

    Hi Joel,

I think your alternative would be to uninstall Netscape 7.1. The NSSetup is not the best option for installing Netscape. What I would suggest is to forego Netscape 7.1 altogether. It is an unstable, buggy application. One bug which would adversely have an effect on your system, is the loss of Mail & Newsgroups Account. See the sticky which I have posted at the top of the Forum. This affects Windows XP more frequently than other OS'. I would suggest that you move on to Mozilla 1.6. You will see only improvements, with little to no difference in appearance. You will not be able to access Netscape Webmail via the Mail & Newsgroups Accounts, but it can always be accessed via the Web portal.

    Mozilla 1.6 Download
    Release Notes

When you uninstall Netscape 7.1, remove these directories:
    c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Netscape 7.1
    C:\Program Files\AOD
    C:\Program Files\AOD\aol
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\mozilla.org\GRE\1.4f_2003062408
(It is important that you delete this directory)
    C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape
(Backup your plugins folder before removing this directory)

Reboot your PC once you have uninstalled Netscape 7.1

Now when you install either Netscape 7.1 or Mozilla 1.6, it will see your existing Profile in: <path>\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\username\*.slt

In your Mail Account folder, if the SBD folders didn't migrate, then manually copy all the SBD folders from Communicator to the Mozilla 1.6 or Netscape 7.1 Mail Account Folder.

If this doesn't work, then I think the only alternative is a manual copy of ALL Communicator Mail files without the SNM extension, and ALL SBD folders, is in order.

If you have Mail in the existing Inbox, or other folders, then you must rename the Communicator Inbox, and other files, i.e., OldInbox, OldSent, etc. This will ensure you lose no mail.

If you have further questions, please post back.
