    Hi,

I have a Microstar Laptop, which I have had for a while, it came with XP already installed which was all good. Then I lent it to a friend and god knows what she did to it but it stopped working. I then wiped the entire thing using the XP Disk that came with it, which then reinstalled XP Home Edition.

The laptop itself works fine and I have had no other issues, all updates (Security and the like) have worked fine, either by using Windows update or download after using Windows Baseline Security Analyliser, however no matter how many times I try I cannot get SP2 or SP3 to install. It downloads fine and starts, does the estimating for space then back's up files, then I get a pop-up saying Set-Up Cancelled, however I have not cancelled it????

I used the Microsoft Website, and thought that maybe it was because my Partion drives (C: & D:) where both set up as FAT32, so I converted both of them to NTFS, however this did not make any difference??

My XP is installed on D:, would this make any difference??

Any help that you could give me would be greatly appriciated as I am not sure what else I could do??

I even contemplated going out and paying for XP, that already comes with SP2, it's got that bad!!
(I unfortunatly have no idea where my XP disk has now gone??)

Big Thanks!!! If you needs anymore information just let me know!!:)

Have you installed the drivers from the disk that came with the machine? You can also look for driver updates at the MSI website.

Start with any motherboard chipset drivers, then graphics, then audio, then any others.

I think you will find if you have a good set of drivers, the Service Packs should install.

If you are still stuck, check for updates for software, probably starting with security programs, then others like burning programs.

    Matt
PS Check the driver installation instructions, they may be two-step, opening, then running the installation program.

Check your Svcpack.log file for errors. By default, this file is located in the C:\Windows folder. To open the Svcpack.log file, click Start > Run, type %windir%\svcpack.log, and then click OK.

    Also, start with installing SP2.

    Hi Again,

    Firstly thankyou for your help.

I have ensured all drivers are installed and tried to install SP2 again. I also checked the SVCpack.Log and I could only see the below as an error:

Using Windows Explorer go to the \Windows\System32 folder and rename the file spupdsvc.exe to spupdsvc.old and retry to update.

Hi, Thanks for that. After I did it, it worked and the update completed.

Updated all the programs, etc and was working fine.

However, my computer decided that it could not take it and died.

Corrupt file in System32 file, won't start saying that it needed ti be repaired using the Windows XP Disk, which I no longer have, so i did what most people would do in that situation, brought a new laptop. Lol.

Thanks for your help though, think my old laptop just could not take it.
