Problem installing sp2 from disk

Using the sp2 disk I recieved from Microsoft I recieved the following error message:

"Autorun program has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for any inconvenience. "

No idea what the problem may be. Any ideas? Thanks.

 

Try opening the cd through Windows Explorer after cancelling the error message you get when inserting it in the drive. Then you can run the program manually. The file is named WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe so just find it and double click it.

 

Thanks guys. Worked great but sp2 is looping when it tries to create a restore point. It doesn't freeze up; the hdd continues to run but no progress is made. I let it install for a couple of hours then came back to check on the progress. No change.

There used to be a section devoted just for sp2. I guess its been intergrated into the xp section. I'll do a search and see if this problem has come up before. Thanks again.

 

Maybe you'll have to allot more space for the Restore point???

It's already set to max. Can't go any higher unless there's a workaround. I disabled sr beforehand and then enabled it and created a restore pt before trying to install sp2. I didn't know setup would try and create another. Can't understand the problem, shouldn't be one, but don't know. Good suggestion tho.

 

Try disabling SR, that will dump all the present points. Then reenable it. That will bring it up empty. Then do SP2 for effect. If no love, disable SR and leave it off for the duration of the SP2 install.

Hi 'dude. Tried both ways with same results. I even created a restore point myself just to make sure Windows was capable.


Hi Arie. I did a full system cleanup and defrag before attempting this install. Also checked for spyware and such with several tools. I did notice during the install that I lost the ability to cancel the install as soon as setup began the restore point creation. I had to ctrl - alt - delete - end task the operation. After end tasking I was notified that the program had stopped responding and had to end task again. Now I'm assuming the install is freezing up at this point instead of looping as I first thought even though the hdd activity indicator light is showing activity during the attempt.

I also went to msconfig and shut down all running programs so none would attempt to install during any reboots I would have to do. I had to uninstall Zone Alarm to keep it from restarting during bootup. Seems it automatically inserts itself in the startup section during a bootup. So nothing was running during install except for the normal processes but I didn't know if I should leave them alone or disable them so I just left them alone.

I also checked several Microsoft sites dealing with sp2 problems but 99% were problems related to after sp2 was installed. The only few I found for install problems were not even close to what I'm experiencing. The ones i did find I had already passed the point of install with no problems.

There is one thing I noticed that may or may not be related. On the envelope the sp2 update cd was sent in has a 'Time Sensitive Material' sticker which also has my address on it. Has this disk become unusable now? I ordered this cd as soon as Microsoft first released them but am just now trying to install it.
Could be why autorun won't work maybe??? Not really sure just asking.

One more thing while I'm thinking about it: This is a dual boot machine. Does that make a difference? I have 98se installed first on the c: drive and xp installed on the e: drive. Again not sure just asking?

It shouldn't unless you were trying to install the service pack from within 98.
Try copying the service pack file from the cd to your hard drive and run it from there.

 

Here's what I have installed for what it's worth. After you get SP2 installed, these will no doubt be needed.

I'm a little behind, intentionally, with the .NET Windows Framework so pay no mind to that. Get whatever version you can stand.

 

Hi Zander. I copied the files from the cd to the hard drive and tried to install from there. I thought I was ok, setup created a restore point without a hitch but installing the files afterwards was a problem because it took about 10 seconds to install each file. After 5 hours and still seeing no progress on the progress bar I gave up and uninstalled it. I think I'll stay sp1 for now. Kids complaining about me tying up the computer too long. Thanks anyway.
