System has 2 x ide hard drives as master & slave.

needed more space, so i bought a 200Gb WD sata hard drive.
my mobo is a gigabyte ga7N400 Pro2 with onboard sata.

i have all the relevant cables, got it all plugged in OK.
enable onboard sata in BIOS and set it to BASE config.

started up, loaded the latest sata driver from the gigabyte website.
    so far all is OK.

can't see the drive in windows explorer.
when i go to device manager, under scsi / raid controllers, the hd
is detected OK - part number, capacity, firmware version etc
device location is set to Channel0 Target0

what am I doing wrong, that I can't actually access the drive?

    many thanks for any help

    ming

If an added SATA is treated by Windows in the same way as an added PATA, You must go to Disk Management and initiate the drive. Next, You will have to partition (at least one) and format for it to be seen in Windows Explorer.

Not sure what BASE configuration is all about but Christer gave you perfect advice. Just did one of these boards about a month ago - nice board.

    ;)

    Thanks Christer,

Disk Management, then Initiated the drive, then partioned it and formatted it.

    Everything working spot on.

    cheers
