Problem in opening windows explorer

Hi,
I am running windows 98. When i opened the internet explorer, I received a message stating that the explorer encountered a problem. I restarted the computer and tried to open the internet explorer but i could not get the explorer opened. Even I was unable to open my computer and my documents kept in my desktop. When I open a jpg image saved in my desktop, I am getting the following message:
"cannot find the title C:\windows\desktop\Apr.155.jpg'(or one of its components) make sure the path and file name are correct and that all required libraries are available.
I have run antivirus and anti spy also. I find no problem in opening firefox.
How to rectify the problem. Any idea?

Windows Explorer Problems

Go into add remove programs > add remove windows components > remove windows explorer
Reboot and add.
This is assuming that you have a windows 98 disk.
As a tip - copy the disk to your hard drive if you have space
You can name it win 98 cd or anything you like
very handy when installing printers etc
I have seen this problem happen with even XP.
I keep running into stupid idiot kids whose friends tell them to speed up games remove explorer ( by deleting directory - not as you are doing it through windows). Causes no end or problems and a reinstall of windows 98 will not repair the problem. Bill Gates got you again.

 

Not sure I've seen Windows Explorer in Add/Remove Windows components (Visionof, sure those kids are not deleting the Internet Explorer folder?)

The only "repair" I think might work is to run Scandisk (boot into Safe Mode and run it there). Put a check in the boxes to Automatically repair errors and do a Surface Scan, it may take several hours.

Its there.
Not in add remove programs but in add remove windows components.

 

Are you sure you're not thinking of something else? Windows Explorer is the file manager in the OS. It's part of Explorer.exe which is the shell and without it, windows wouldn't run. I've never seen where you could uninstall it.

 

You are correct in terminology.
I was referring to the microsoft internet browser - the about calls it "Internet Explorer "

 

Well, that explains it. However, uninstalling IE in the windows components part of add>remove programs doesn't really uninstall it. It only removes access to it. Shortcuts and things like that. The program remains there just as it was before the uninstall. So, uninstalling it in this manner wouldn't really help.

If, however, you've updated to IE 5 or 6, there should be an entry for it in the regular part of add>remove programs. Using it, you can uninstall it. However, it will still remain then also. This reverts it back to IE4. But, when you choose to uninstall it, there's also an option to repair IE which might not be a bad thing to try.
