    Hello samisnow,

This should be in the firefox forum but:
From within Firefox>click on the menu bar>help>about firefox>from popup what version does it say it is? Click on the Update button.

Reference for install or update issues:
    http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Updating Firefox

May or may not needed but I am including this link for Firefox 4.0 download now just in case: (size 12 MB name Firefox Setup 4.0.exe)
    http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/fx/

Download the installer [Post #2] & then install FF 4.0.

    That should work.

I have gone through all betas and RCs of 4.0, using a different profile from that of 3.6.16,, with no issue. The moment I got 4.0 final, as per link in an e-mail from the Mozilla people, there has been a constant struggle. I was able to download it, and install it in a folder of its own, which I had to rename, because it insisted in installing on top of 3.6.16. In spite of that it manage to knock out the shortcut to 3.6.16. The latter's folder was intact, and I was able to create a new shortcut. I will not bore you with all the antics thrown at me, and the fact that, daily, one very compatible addon, the Prefbar simply disappeared from the Extention's list. I have had to reinstall it twice, so far. It appears, from other's reports, that the downloads have been smooth, and if I wanted to pitch 3.6.16, I would have been able to pick the latter's profile. In all cases, there are incompatible extentions, but, in my case, there should have been no issue, since I was going from 4.0RC2 to 4.0 final.
If 4.0 final wants to force me to abandon 3.6.16, by irritating, you know what answer I have for it.
Anyway, I would go to the link giving by goddez1, for the download. And, good luck, after that.

Must admit I did have a bit of snafu with 4.0 myself. When downloaded and installed I was using betaxx updated to a "RC" version3 something or other and allowed this version just to update over the older. Didn't turn out well and had to uninstall all, make sure to clean up any dredge stuff left over related to firefox and installl clean, Since then I haven't had any abnormal problems. Flash is still a booger but I didn't expect less. It's a booger no matter which browser is used. Extensions and addons not an issue, for me, as I try to limit these to only a few and only the newer.

So what is the story? Should FF 3+ be uninstalled before installing FF4?
Why doesn't Mozilla give us some instructions about this matter?

I installed 4 over the top of 3 - was given an Upgrade button to hit. Installed with no issues - not keen on it though.

I think that Mozilla wants people to rid of 3.6.16, but are not saying it.
I am using both versions, installed in different folders, and run with separate profiles, but 4.0 has been pulling some many tricks that I, thoroughly, disliked it. Let alone, some quirky stuff, like coming up with no Menu Bar, nor what used to be called Status Bar, now called addon or extention bar.
My original installation came with no hints, like the red thingy on the upper left, when the Menu Bar was, and found in 4.0 portable. I had to stumble to get things back to the original in 4.0RC2.
I had not received an upgrade notice, but, instead from Mozilla, telling me that 4.0 final was out.
And, unlike previous builds, I have not figured out how to put anything of value in the mostly empty menu bar, instead of cluttering the Status Bar.
