O.K. Ive got a cooling problem with my amd athalon xp 2000. Runs at 135-141 doing simple tasks like internet and solitare. Bought a thermaltake volcano 9 and it got worse....to the point my system would lock up. Removed and installed amd fan and sink and it works fine..just hot. Ive got an msi board, amd 2000 cpu with stock fan and sink. Need any other info let me know. thanks in advanced

Try some Arctic Silver 3 thermal paste between the chip and heatsink, clean any old stuff off first. HTH. :)

Make sure that you have installed the heatsink/fan combo correctly.
The clip that you use to install the fan should be towards the top of your motherboard. The step on the heatsink should also be pointing towards the top of the motherboard as well.
Also, use only a tiny bit of thermal compound, just enough to cover the die of the processor. Make sure that you clean and reapply if you remove the heatsink/fan.

Some good info is available here....

I did use artic silver 3 and the heatsink was on correct. I put the temp probe under the cpu like the instructions say. My next ? is could it have been that the volcano is to powerfull for the motherboard? Msi said to big of fan could burn out the board. Should i try using the four prong(i think its called a molex plug?) to hook it up instead of the motherboard plug? It was wierd...i wlaked away came back and the screen was black and it wouldnt respond. Shut it off for 15 minutes and it booted up fine.....then while i was defraging it just locked up again and i had to turn the power off. Let it sit for 15...booted up fine. All i want is a cool cpu. lol thanks again.
