I just downloaded and installed the SPI service pack update, and now every time I reboot, I get the "install new hardware" wizard referencing my HP Laserjet 3100 printer.

(I also now have an icon I'm not familiar with next to my clock at the bottom of the desktop -- an icon that does not respond to left or right clicks -- but it disappears after I cancel the "install new hardware" wizard.)

Anyway, this printer was very problematic to install previously -- some of its drivers could not be installed -- and HP advised me to leave things as they were, since the printer seemed to work fine anyway. So I really want to avoid re-installing it and possibly losing the functionality I now have with this printer.

So my question is, How to I stop the "install new hardware" wizard from appearing after every reboot?

Also, one other problem: after a reboot, my desktop icons only slowly refresh on the screen. I wonder if SP1 did something to my video settings.

Since I had already installed all previous windows updates, should I just uninstall SP1 and try to get back to the excellent shape my PC was in before the installation?

Anyway, advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks for your help.

    Never mind!

I noticed that the SP1 installation also caused some other problems as well, including substituting the normal screen font used in Quicken with another font that was unreadable.

So I just uninstalled the **** thing.

Now everything's back to normal -- no more "install new hardware" wizard appearing after reboot -- except for the fact that my desktop icons still refresh very slowly (i.e., change from white boxes to filled in, colored icons) after reboot.

If anyone knows how to correct that, I'd appreciate it.

(Whew! Thanks a million, Microsoft. With "updates" like that, who needs viruses?)
