I have a laptop set up on a domain through a wireless connection. The Primary Domain Controller is NT 4.0. When I try to install a printer, which other computers on the domain can see and use easily, there is nothing available to install. Can anyone give me some insight as to how to print from this laptop on a domain? Thank you.

Could you give more detials about "there is nothing available to install" ?

BTW, usually, the "shared" printer should not be hooked into a laptop. Instead, it should be connected to a desktop or server.

There is no printer to install, when trying to do so from the laptop, and the printer is not hooked to the laptop, it is connected to the computer serving as the print server for the domain, which every other computer on the domain can see and access. Once again, it is an NT 4.0 domain and an XP Pro laptop. Thanks, Dennis

Sorry, I did not clearly understand your first post.

The easiest way it let your laptop join the NT Domain first, and then add a network printer by the wizard, in some case, it may ask you for the driver CD.

    My Apologies

I apologize for not stating this clearer. I have already joined the laptop to the domain and when I run the wizard, there are not printers listed to install to the laptop. This has me a bit puzzled although Ihave determined that XP does not like any of the earlier Windows Server OSes very much. Upgrading this server to 2003 is not an option. All help is greatly appreciated.

That's not a problem. We have the same one in our customer's network.

Are you sure you have logon the NT domain from your laptop?

And the user you use to logon to NT domain has been assigned the right to access the network printer?

Yes, I have to log on to the NT domain, and the user has the rights necessary. But even on the other machines, when the user did not have necessary rights, the printers still showed up in the wizard.

You spooler service is not running.

    Start, Run, services.msc

    Start the Spooler service.
Set its startup desposition status to Automatic.

Is this on the print server or the laptop? Thanks for the reply. It makes the most sense so far do to some other issue on he network.

I checked this this morning and the spooler service is running on both machines. I also found that the Administrator account has access to the printers, but no other account on that laptop does. Even if I change one of the other accounts to administrator priviliedges, it still will not allow a printer to be installed. I hate computers! Does anyone have any other ideas, based on the updated info? Thanks, Dennis Myhand

Okay, here is the updated information. I used the script to add a printer for everyone. I also made sure group everyone had rights for loading and unloading drivers. The script added the printers and when I tried to print as the user, I received the error that the print spooler was not running. I ran the commands to start the spooler and was told the printer cannot be found. So, since the Administrator account has all the printers, I told the teacher to log the user in on the admin account to let them print. The computer is not seeing the domain, but is seeing printers on the domain. It is more than I care to deal with at this time. Thanks to all for the assistance. It is much appreciated.
