After setting my Epson Stylus CX5500 printer to draft and printing one good copy, I tried reprinting the same thing. It printed but with lines through it as though the ink was running out, and the black outline did not print. Further attempts at printing on both normal setting and draft have resulted with colour prints, but no black, although the cartridge still registers as half full. the "draft" setting has always started noisily with a clunk before printing. I do a lot of printing for assignments at TAFE (a technical college) A similarly titled post covers a different problem.

I don't know Epsons very well, anyway...

Go to Control Panel -> Printers, right-click on the printer and look through the tabs. You should be able to print out a test page, try that. Look for an option to clean the cartridge heads.

Most often, even if I know the printer, I suggest going to the printer manufacturer's website and looking up information and FAQs. You might need to do some cleaning on it or as I said, the heads might be blocked.

Look up the "Contact Us" information at Epson and ask them. I expect it is out of warranty, so just ask them if they could point you to any relevant knowledgebase or FAQ information. I always judge hardware manufacturers on doing a little bit for you past warranty, if not, they don't get my business again.

I have found the instruction sheets and followed the directions for cleaning the print head. After following the procedure there was a faint line in black so I repeated the process and it seems to have cleared the problem. Thank you for your suggestion.

thank you for your suggestion(s) I managed to find the printers user instructions and followed the directions to clean the printer head. A test print showed faint black markings so I repeated the procedure and it is now printing normally.

oops sorry for the second thanks, my screen remained blank with the thinking symbol revolving so I did not realize it had posted successfully
