    Dell Dimension 4100
    Op Sys: Windows 98SE
2 USB ports (not on a PCI card)

OK, just bought a new printer, Epson R300, they tell me it prints great, anyway, I believe that I have it installed correctly. No warnings in the device manager, and the Epson tech tells me it is a operating system problem. After going over the ports/drivers/etc. So, here are my problems...

When printing from any software, I get a program error, and the program shuts down.

When trying to print a test page from the Printer folder, I get a rundll32 system error, telling me the program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

Is there anyway I can fix Win98? or should I upgrade to 2000? or am I way off base.

    Thanks

    Mr Baloo,

You have the right idea. You seem to be attacked by some pests and you should uninstall the new printer, clean up your box, and then reinstall it.

Suggest you download adaware se (link in "links" in my sig.) update it online and update spybotSD and your antivirus; then offline, run adaware followed by spybot and then the AVG antivirus. Then start a new thread in the spyware forum and post another hijackthis log there for further advice.

Suggest you also remove weatherbug; it is a security problem.

Following up on previous printing problem....

Well, even after the cleanup, the printer still refuses to print.

    Running Windows 98SE
installed USB 2.0 PCI card (works fine)

Each time I try to print a test page, I get a RUNDLL32 illegal operation error.
When printing from word or excel, I get the illegal operation and will be shut down error.

I have tried other devices on the USB ports, and they work. (camera) I also have a Epson scanner on the motherboard USBs and it works.

    Help please.

Please do not start a new thread which is a continuation of an existing thread - just post to the existing thread. This avoids confusion both for you and those trying to help.

My error; thanks for fixing it, Pete. Realized he'd get more help in this forum, but ...
    :)

    Mr Baloo,

Rerun hijackthis offline and check the following, if still present, for removal:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = about:blank

We should wait for another opinion; I think you certainly needed the clean-up, but if this hasn't solved the printer problem, I wonder if you can test the USB ports with another item, sudh as a camera or flash card reader to make sure they're working correctly. We have a printer here running on 98SE and a USB connection without a problem, so I doubt that windows is the problem.

You have a CoolWebSearch infection, for which you should download and install CWShredder 2.0. It will put a new shortcut on the desktop to run the program once installed. Open and with all other windows closed, click fix. Run HijackThis again and fix the following entries if present.

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = about:blank
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://server224.smartbotpro.net/7search/?hkcu
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://server224.smartbotpro.net/7search/?hklm
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = http://www.kazaa-lite.ws/
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = http://www.kazaa-lite.ws/

However, I don't think this would cause your printing problems. Unhook the printer, then uninstall it from device manager. If you installed software with it, remove it from add/remove programs. Reboot. Run the system file checker. Shut down, reconnect the printer and restart the machine.

OK, ran shredder, didnt find anything, however, I had manually deleted all the temporary files.... had a lot of trouble with this as there were def some things going on in there....

checked and fixed the items in hijack... and ran system file checker... found that the setupx.dll file was corupt... not sure if this could have been the problem but here is the current hijack....

Here's a good HiajckThis tutorial. There is a link there with a good description of the 02 Browser Helper Objects. As previously mentioned, Kontiki is considered as undesireable by many, and recommend removing it.

    Is the printer working now?

and after cleaning up all that, the printer will still not print... can I reinstall Win98se over itself and not create a big mess? my thoughts are I still have some currupt windows files there... didthe sys file check and cleaned a setupx.dll file.

    OR, should I do a win2000 upgrade?

I just want to get my printer to work... (repeated sighs)

I really think this is a driver issue, or maybe even a USB issue. Did you try it on the MB USB port? Check the printer driver versions against the V6.5bA drivers, even though the release date on those is fairly old.

    Check the following also;

From the Start menu, choose Settings, and then select Control Panel.
Double-click the Printers icon, right-click the printer you are having problems with, and then choose Properties.
In the Printer Properties window, select the option to print directly to the printer, and then click OK.

Note: The location of this option will vary by printer.

Some devices require the software to be installed before being connected. Have you tried it both ways?

Is there any more information you can provide about the errors?

    excess start-up baggage?

There seems to be an awful lot of stuff starting at boot. Personally, I keep those start-up programs to a bare minimum. That make my computer more efficient. I use Startup.exe.

Wonder if eliminating all the startup things could eliminate a conflict with the printer software? If it works when they're eliminated, then add them back one at a time till the culprit is found; but only add back what you actually use a lot. Most programs can be run from icons or the menu as needed.

I would assume that EPIJNL70.DRV is the printer driver. and this is the latest update for Win98 from the epson website....?????

I also cleaned up my startup settings..... I have an upgrade to Win2000 should I try the upgrade?

I could be wrong, but it appears to me you have a bad printer driver. It's possible that it's not copying it properly from the cd or something. I would suggest downloading the driver from Epson, extract it to it's own folder and run the setup.exe to replace the drivers. It may be necessary to delete the existing drivers first too. Here's a step-by-step pdf.

It is possible that there is a driver conflict too. You might try disabling some other devices in device manager if reinstalling the drivers doesn't help.

I have an upgrade to Win2000 should I try the upgrade?

It operates somewhat differently than 9X so there will be a learning curve but I think in the end you will like 2K better.

However, it is NEVER a good idea to upgrade to cure problems. Upgrades need to be done to a system that is running perfectly. Otherwise, wipe the existing and do a clean install of the new OS. You can do it with the 2K upgrade - at some point it will ask you for proof that you have a valid Microsoft OS but all you will need to do is put in the 9X install cd for a few seconds.

If you get 98 running smoothly, the upgrade is a good way to go but after the driver issue is fully dealt with, I suggest you use the following routine to clean up 98 as well as possible before upgrading. In fact, this is a pretty good idea to do once a month or so even if you plan to keep 98 for a while longer.

    General clean-up instructions for Win95/98/ME
    • Open a browser window and dump all TIF (temporary internet files) and cookies. Close.
    • Open windows explorer and
.. delete the contents of all temp folders
.. delete any files in c:\ with a name filennnn.chk (where nnnn is any number so file0001.chk, file1034.chk, etc)
    • verify that you have fewer than 500 files & folders directly under c:\. If you are close to that number, remove or move some files.
    • empty the recycle bin
    • boot to DOS
    • from the command prompt do the following
.. scanreg /fix <ENTER> (press the ENTER key)
      .. scanreg /opt <ENTER>
****note that 95 does not have scanreg.exe but a copy from 98 or ME will run fine if you can get one
      .. scandisk c:\ /nosave /autofix /surface <ENTER>
.. Win /D:M (forces a safe mode windows start)
    • Run another scandisk (start~programs~accessories~system tools) and check for a standard scan and to fix all errors found. The DOS scan couldn't check for long file name issues.
    • Run a defrag
    • Reboot to normal Windows.
