I have a Brother HL-1440 laser printer installed on a Vista machine via USB connection and it works fine. I have shared the printer so I can access it from an XP machine on the same network. When I try and install it on the XP machine it asks for an INF file. Does anyone know what this file is and/or where it is. I went back to Brother but they claimed it was a Microsoft issue!

I am installing it from the ADD PRINTER on the XP machine. After I find the printer on the network, I tell it to install it. At that point it says it needs an "(unknown) inf file." I have pointed to two different INF folders but without knowing what filename is required it aborts the install.

If you do a print test page from the PC that has the Printer attached it will print out a list of the files used on the Test Page. Then if need be you can copy the files from one PC to the Other.

Also - may sound like a stupid question.
Have you attached the printer to the XP machine and see if XP see's it as new hardware ?
