Running Win XP Home with HJP Pavilion PC and HP Desk Jet 610cl printer.

I had had some problems some time back with the printer spitting out one sheet of paper then erroring out, this happening on bootup. I was advised to not turn the printer on until booted up and should solve the problem. Well it did.

A week ago I forgot to turn it off and the next morning when I booted up, nothing happened and I've been printing a lot of data this past week.

This morning when I booted up the old problem resumed. I shut it down and back on again. Then this afternoon I needed tp print something and the printer would start to feed a sheet of paper then it would stop and the error light would come on and an Icon would appear where the printer icon normally appears and the error light would come on.

I've done everything I can think of including re-installing Win XP.

I've uninstalled and re-installed the printer several times, checked the cables, all of that. Nothing works to make the printer print. All it will do is feed paper and error out. The computer recognizes the printer with no problem.

Any thought anyone or should I go shopping for new printer.

Just a thought - can you print a test page via Printers & Faxes > right click on the Printer > Properties > Print test Page?

Moving this to Hardware - title edited

BTW -Please use a descriptive title to your threads which reflects your problem. Far better chance then that somebody will stop by and assist.

    Hi RickyD2,

I find the HP's quite reliable.

May not be able to tell much without knowing what the error message is. Have you tried right-clicking on the error icon?

HP support page for that model:Support

    Has links to error messages

    and drivers

Try those latest drivers, but first remove the old printer (and any other printers if you have any and don't really need them). Look in Add/Remove programs and remove any HP software, then go to the printers folder, highlight the printer and select File > Delete (or right-click and select delete). I would then power off the printer and reboot Windows. Run the drivers installation program and then power the printer back up (may take another reboot if it won't print a test page).

One thing about those models is to keep the ink cartridge carriage really clean (the bar that the cartridges run on). Use some cleaning alcohol (spirit) and tissue paper. Remove the sheet collector and check for any stray (torn) paper and the rubber rollers look OK. Make sure the sheet collector is reseated correctly.

    Matt

    Printer Problems

mattman, I tried everything here. The one HP site does a remote analysis and found no problems with drivers. Did all the things
the error message page said to do - it will feed one sheet of paper then the error light starts flashing - it just will not print.

The only strange thing is that it is not found by Device Manager -
the port is found but not the printer.

The printer is daisy chained with a scanner but that has never been a problem. Could it be now? I haven't changed the configuration of the cables to find out but I will. I just thoughtof that.

Anyway, mattman, thanks for the neat links and your good efforts.

A searchable hp Printer Forum which might help you here

I purchased my $150 printer in November 2003 and I keep it plugged in and turned on constantly. The printer did not include a manual. I found this reset trick on that forum which has helped me a couple of times when I wanted to use the printer and I would have to push the green button first which was annoying. I reset it as follows which easily solved the problem -

Power off the printer, hold the orange Job Cancel Button down while powering the printer back on. Hold the button down more than 10 seconds, but less than 20 seconds.

Well, friends, I am totally mystified. The last thing I tried to do last night before shutting down was the "Align Print Cartridges "
command which it would not do and errored out (the resume printing light on the printer came on) and a message appeared from the printer icon in systray that the document failed to print.
This is what it has been doing from the first failure Thursday morning.
Now comes the mystifying part. When I booted up this morning, the printer, which I did not turn off before shutting down, ejected a blank sheet of paper. Then about 15 minutes later the align cartridge print appeared. I then tried a test print and it printed.
I tried a couple of short documents and they printed.

The printer is slow in response to the print command and seemsto get really slow when printing something in color on a document, like an URL or e-mail link.

    Any thoughts?

I would try removing the LTP port in Device Manager and reboot.

If that does not work, then it may be setup with the scanner. Then I would delete the printer and remove any software/drivers related to the scanner. Disconnect the cable and do a full boot without it. Reconnect and let Windows detect the printer...then install the scanner.

Haven't had much to do with scanners. One setup was a breeze, the other was a nightmare.

Can they be reversed in the daisy-chain?

Re -reading this post reminded my of experiences with a Deskjeit 520 daisy-chained through a parallel port Zip drive - no end of problems.

Resolved by running the printer via a Parallel/USB cable - worked a treat.

I would try disconnecting the scanner and connecting the printer direct to the Parallel port.

I kinda think now that it has decided to work again, I'll just let it be for a couple of days and see what happens.

    I'll keep you posted.

    Appreciate all the good advice.

When in doubt, Pull it out. Thats right - pull the power cord out of the wall socket or wherever you have the printer plugged in. Wait a half minute or so and plug it back in. May small wonders never cease .............
