Not sure if this should go in the "Networking," "Hardware," or "Windows 7" thread...

I have a Windows 7 system and an Epson Workforce 310 printer, connected via Ethernet through my router.

Not so long ago the printer kinda stopped printing. I say "kinda" because when I attempt to print a document (from any application) the printer's status window pops up and states "printing." however, nothing happens. The printing application is basically frozen. I can go into Windows Task Manager and close it, but still nothing.

However, when I reboot my system all documents I was trying to print earlier just start printing.

I've updated to the latest driver software and have replaced all of the ink cartridges. Same results.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks!

Reinstall the software for the printer would be my next step.

After the printing is over, can you print more documents or do you have to reboot ?

Sounds to me like the printing job is stuck in the printing Que, and then at start up it completes the job.

After printing is done, I can't print other documents. I need to reboot.

As for re-setting up the printer:

If it's a network printer (ethernet) then be sure to set the printer with a static IP address, else the router will assign a different IP address from time to time.

Windows 7 has a function "to use this printer when its IP address changes" but it's not a reliable function. Why have the operating system do that when it's more stable to let the printer have the same IP address all of the time.

If your printer is connected by wifi, the problem you are experiencing is that the printer's wifi adapter is "sleeping" when the printer is not being used, and it fails to wake up when a print job is started. This means the wifi is misconfigured on the wifi router.

I do have the printer set to a static IP. Good suggestion, though.

Arie, I tried the "Microsoft tool: Printing problems and printing errors" program you suggested. It found an error that the printer was no longer part of my workgroup. I let the software fix the problem and printing was back to normal...until the next time I rebooted, then the problem returned. However, the printer was part of my workgroup.

The black ink ran out during my troubleshooting, so I just started printing to a different device. Today I picked up new ink, installed it, rebooted the computer and printer...same problem, except when I rebooted this time, nothing printed, even though there was still a job in the cue.

I deleted the waiting job. Opened the Epson Control Panel. Did a nozzle check, tried printing again and everything is working fine.

I have absolutely no idea why this problem happened, or why it's fixed. Everything I did this afternoon I tried in the past. I can print again...for now...

Thank you everyone for the advice. It's much appreciated :)

    Brian
