    Hi all,

I am building our first Print Server. I have Server 2003 R2 32-bit installed as the OS. I used the "auto-detect" feature in Print Management to locate the majority of my LAN printers. Worked great. I just installed the compatible Server 2003 32-bit drivers for each one and can print to them all just fine.

Now, MOST of the client PCs that will connect to these printers are XP Pro machines that use the same driver, so this is not a problem.

    BUT...

I happen to have Windows 7 x64... I also have a half dozen Server 2008 R2 x64 boxes that need to use these printers.

So how do I install those drivers on the Print Server? I tried the "Additional Drivers" under "sharing ", but it won't let me do it that way. I also tried "New Driver" under "Advanced ", but when I go through the wizard and select the 64-bit driver INF, I get the following message:

I have to assume that I want to do is possible. If so, how?

And if it's not possible, then I am missing the solution. Could someone give me a hand, please? THANKS!

    Chris

When you lookup the specs of the printer(s) does it say it supports Win 7 64 bit and Server 2008?

Yep. And I've downloaded and unzipped the 64-bit drivers into a local folder on the 32-bit Print Server. I just need to know how to install them there so they are available to 64-bit clients that connect.

As an onlooker here :) .....
64 bit drivers will not work on a 32 bit system - try the 32 bit drivers?

    Hi Pete,

Yeah, this I know... But I don't want the 32-bit server itself using the 64-bit drivers, but I DO need the 64-bit clients that connect to be able to...

I might be explaining this wrong... Does that make sense?

I did that. Did it from the beginning. But when I try to, for example, install the printer onto one of my 2008 R2 boxes, it tells me it cannot find the driver.

    Why?

Because 2008 R2 needs a 64-bit driver, and I don't have it installed on the print server.

That's why I need it installed in addition to the 32-bit driver.

Now... I CAN unpack the 64-bit driver locally on each client, and after connecting to the print server, install it that way. I know that will work. But I'm just looking to avoid that, if possible. Is it not possible?
