A year ago, when Google decided to upgrade the tool bar to v.4, I didn't like it, so I reinstalled the v.3 and I did something, following advice found in a Google group, to prevent future updates. Unfortunately, I can't remember what that was, except that it was extremely simple, just changing a line somewhere, and that it was supposed to fool the updater in its query.
After all the cleaning up I had to do to get rid of a virus, (under Noahdfear's skillful guidance) whatever I had done to stop Google from updating my tool bar got reversed by one of scans.
Does anyone know how I can get back that setting and enjoy my old toolbar again?

    Thanks in advance

PS I run Windows 2000 Professional

Download MSCONFIG from the following link.

Launch is and look in the statup tab to uncheck the goggle update option.

msconfig from WinXP: Ripped from WinXP, can be used in Win2k

    Fixed

    Hi Steve:

Thanks for your reply. I have msconfig, but there is nothing listed from Google in Startup, though it maybe after the fix I did over the weekend, as after scratching my memory, I remembered that what I had done a year ago had to do with "host ", so I put that in the search engine at Google groups and I found the old post.

FYI and future refernce, here is the fix:

"host file is usualy found in
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
Open it with your editor and there will be at least one entry for
    127.0.0.1 localhost

    Add this line underneath..
    127.0.0.1 toolbar.google.com

Save the file and no more updates until YOU decide you want it "
