I operate Windows Vista Home Premium on an HP laptop and use Windows Mail. To view an attached file I have to use Forward. When the filename appears in the attachment window, if it is a .pps file and I double click it I get an error dialog stating that no program is associated with this type of file. Wrong! PPTVIEWER2007.EXE has been set as the default program for .pps type files. So I have to open the viewer which resides on my desktop and this gives me a file list dialog. If I click and drag the .pps file from the forwarded Windows Mail window and drop it into the file list dialog window, it appears there. I then right click it and Open With Windows Presentation Viewer 2007. Works fine then. However I have also noticed that when you right click the file in the Windows Mail forward dialog window, you do not get Open With as one of the listed options. Yet this seems to work fine elsewhere. Do I have some sort of gremlin in my laptop?

Not likely. Have you ran a registry cleaner on this PC?

There have been some suggestions that making a change to the registry works:

    1. In Vista's Start Search box type regedit
    2. At the top of the Start menu, click regedit.exe
    3. Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PowerPointViewer.SlideShow.11\Shell\Show
    4. Right-click on Show and select Rename, rename to Open
    5. Repeat for the key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PowerPointViewer.SlideShow.12\Shell\Show
    6. Close the Registry Editor

    This should fix your problem.

    Hi Arie,

That seems to have fixed the problem of opening and viewing the .pps file by double clicking it. Thank you very much.

Is the lack of an 'Open With' option (one right click) another problem or does it not appear in Windows Mail by design.

I am a regular user of CCleaner. Is this the culprit?

Do you use the registry cleaner in CC? If so, that may be the problem. I have used the Reg. Cleaner in CC hundreds of times and no ill effects. That don't mean the next time, I won't be sorry. :D

    Hi MrBill,

Thanks for your tip. I do use the registry cleaner in CCleaner, and usually get very few entries found and I check these before proceeding and always have the program make a backup. I will keep a keen eye out in future, but at least I know how to fix the problem if it occurs again.

    Thank you Arie.

The solution you proposed was used and appeared to solve the problem, ie a registry edit. I understand that the drop down menu in Windows Live Mail is by design without an Open With option. No doubt with good reason - MS did it!
