I'm getting ready to install 98SE on a used harddrive. Do I need to uninstall the old Dos partition seperately, or will doing a "format c:" take care of everything?

If the drive only has one partition (the c: drive) and you just want to keep it a single partition, then formatting the c: drive should be good enough for what you want to do.

    Hi Breakout!

I would use the Win98 start disk and start with CD-ROM support.

When the computer has been started, at the A: prompt I would start by typing "FDISK /MBR" without the double quotes and hit <ENTER>. Nothing visible will happen but this will rebuild the MasterBootRecord in order to get a fresh start.

Next, I would start FDISK to check the partition information. If it reads C: - Primary DOS - Active - 100% , then I would be satisfied and exit FDISK.
If not, I would remove the existing partition and create a new one, using all space and making it active. This will require a restart afterwards.

Only then, would I format the single partition using the "FORMAT C: /U" command or the "FORMAT C: /U /S" command. The latter will transfer the system files to C: in order to make it bootable without using a Win98 start disk.

If the computer has been started with CD-ROM support, put the CD in and type "E:" <ENTER> and then "INSTALL" <ENTER>.

(E: should be the drive letter for the CD-ROM drive.)
