Hello, I'm working on a laptop with Windows XP Home installed. Using UBCD4Win I found a few viruses and spyware that have since been removed but when I try to boot this computer, I run into a small problem.

After the initial Windows splash screen loads, the blue welcome screen shows up with the mouse in the middle. It doesn't respond to ctrl+alt+del to bring up the logon screen but the mouse moves. The HDD does not spin so I'm wondering how to diagnose this, as it seems to be a hard topic to research.

If anyone has some insight to this I'd appreciate it.

    Few extra notes:

I've removed the memory and tried to boot it up but same problem.

Does anyone have a clue? Some troubleshooting tips? A website source? Anything? I really need to get this done asap.

fluxx - Welome to the Board :)

I can understand your frustration, but please bear in mind that this site is manned entirely by volunteers and you must be patient .....
Please clarify - the hard drive is physically not spinning or the hard drive light stops flashing at that point. If the former there is a problem with power to it, but if this was the case you would not get to the Welcome Screen.

Can you start in Safe Mode? If so go Start > Run > cmd > Enter

Change to the root directory at the prompt - cd\

Type chkdsk /r > Enter and reboot after the message re scheduling a disk check ....

Thank you, at this point in the screen, the HDD light stops and I can hear that the drive is not spinning (and maybe the light has gone bad...like that happens. :D)

Anyway when I boot into safe mode it's the exact same problem. I'll try running chkdsk from recovery mode or a boot cd.

The HD light will only be lit when the disk is being read or written to as I'm sure you know :)

Might try running disk diagnostics from the drive manufacturer ....

    ExcelStore ....

    Hitachi .....

    Samsung ....

    Seagate, Maxtor, Quantum .....

    Western Digital ....

Another tack - run fixboot and/or fixmbr from the Recovery Console

I do, which is the point, if it is just loading windows...then it should be reading SOMETHING... thus why I thought it worth noting. Anyway, I'm running a deep scan of the hd to find any bad sectors or such. thanks for the tips pete
