I have just returned from a vacation and working to set up my internet connection in my Linksys router.

I created a connect to link to my ISP on my Desktop machine and can connect but when I log into the router and set the UN & PW it wont authenticate with my ISP. This of course prevents my laptop from connecting via my wireless network

The connection type is PPPoE and my user name and password are correct.

    Any thoughts would be appreciated

    1. no need for Linksys software.
    2. your dsl modem has a built in router already.
    3. set the modem in Bridge mode for use with the Linksys router.

What modem do you have? (exact brand & model number)

I wasn't looking for software on the router
    No, it doesn't
Please explain - there is no place to make such a setting in the modem
    Speedstream 4200

    Thanks

I see that the modem is a
The following is on the label
This is different to the one in the link you sent me. In fact, here is a link to the modem I have. It most definitely is not a router. The setup instructions are not applicable to the modem I have however. http://help.optuszoo.com.au/help/dsl/connected/windows/optus_modems/speedstream_4200
I followed the instructions in the link you sent on how to set up the router with the modem. It also does not apply. You can see the 3 available screens when I log into the modem here http://cedarsprings.cc
I think I have found the answer though. Resetting the modem to factory default removes the log in data. From there I set up the router with the PPPoE settings and away it went
    Thanks

    Glad you got it working.

Technically your modem is a router too. It has DHCP and NAT. It may not have a built in 4 port switch, but it does have a built in one port switch.

Your ISP has implemented its own custom firmware on that speedstream, limiting the feature set.

If you omit the linksys and plug the comp directly to the modem, it will assign your comp a non-routable private IP address (192.158.2.x). That's a function of the router in the modem.

Years ago, dsl modems did not do this, the modem WAN IP address was passed on to the computer. But this is a security risk as it puts the comp wide open to the rest of the WWW, while these newer dsl modems include a minimal router whiich uses Network Adddress Translation to route traffic from the WAN to a private IP address and blocks incoming requests from the WAN.
