    Hi,
I am using Win98 SE and have been having trouble sending Emails.
When I go Start>Run>and type in winipcfg>click OK the IP configuation always comes up PPP adapter.
I am using Linksys Etherfast 10/100 USB network.
I think this is where my problem is.
How do I get 'Linksys Etherfast 10/100 USB network' to stay as the IP configuration?
    Thanks
    Lewis

    Hi Lewis,
Can you download your emails at all?

If you can set it as "Linksys Etherfast 10/100 USB network ", does it work correctly then?

PPP is a protocol that you would expect the mail server to be using. "Linksys Etherfast 10/100 USB network" is an internal setting for the network.

Can you tell us more about the problem, is it solely isolated to email? If so, I would look at the settings for accessing the email server. These might be in Control Panel -> Internet Connections or maybe, if you use Outlook (Express), in the Tools -> Accounts menu where you specify the address and protocol of the mail server.

If you have a setup disk from the ISP, you may need to rerun it (especially if you have changed your networking system).

Sorry, I am only tossing some possibilities. My Win 98 system is no longer my direct connection to the internet (and I mainly use web-based email anyway). I hope it gives you some areas to investigate anyway.

    Matt

    Hi Lewis

if you can receive email with it set to PPP, then that should be correct for sending as well

can you browse OK with it set to PPP?

a couple more things which may be affecting this are your antivirus and firewall; many AV solutions sneak in between your email client and the ISP email servers and have the capability to upset things  similarly, the firewall will be "getting in the way" (and is a bit different for incoming and outgoing email)

If you could let us know what you use for AV and firewall, and what email client you are using pls... to help get a better picture :)

Did it work OK once and then pack up - or has it always given trouble?

    best wishes, HJ
