I have 2 serial hard drives which worked fine until Tuesday when I thought the power supply died.

Both HD's are bootable (both XP PRO SP2)

after some trouble shooting i discovered that the power supply works only when my second HD is not plugged in.

When i plug the 2nd HD in, the PS dies. not even a single led or chassis fan remains on.

the problem is the second drive contains data that I need.

(technical help only, no lectures about backups please)

    XP PRO SP2 (dual boot)
    ASUS - P5GD2 Deluxe
    P4 3.0GH
    1.5G Ram
    Nvidia 7900GS

    HD1: SATA Maxtor 6L250S0
HD2: SATA Seagate (not plugged in)

Try another power lead. If no joy, you're probably SOL, as it looks like the 2nd drive has developed a short.

hmm, is it possible to recover the data somehow, the disk inside is probably fine.

someone has suggested to me that I may be able to purchase an identical HD and swap out the controller boards without too much difficulty. i.e. no soldering or anything complicated.

Is there any truth to that?

I remember a thread on here many moons ago in which that solution was proposed and, I think, achieved, but don't take my word for it, use the search facility and try to find it.

Whether or not any soldering is required I don't know, but I wouldn't bank a clean, simple swap.

The second hard drive will need to be exactly the same in every respect down to part nos on chips, etc.

BTW - did you try another power lead?

I also think you should try hitching up the drive as slave in another computer - it may work - you never know your luck :)

Professional data recovery companies can recover data if the platters are undamaged, but it costs :(
