Post-SP1 hotfixes guide - bat install

i wrote this guide for batch installing post-SP1 winxp pro hotfixes, but the batch files don't run when i try to run ? nothing happens ?

any ideas why ?
well after doing the manual checking of the order of WinXP Pro post-SP1 i managed to compile the 2 batch install files for updating

clean WinXP SP1 to recent March 11, 2003 (minus Microsoft .Net Framework as i don't install this anyway)

last critical update: Feb 14, 2002 IE6 - "Incorrect VBScript Handling can Allow Web Pages to Read Local Files" security vulnerability in Internet Explorer 6 and Windows XP or Windows 2000'

last recommended update: Q811009: Windows XP Media Center Edition Fast User Switching

step1:
- create a folder named 'hotfixes-postSP1' in C: directory
- create 2 subfolders inside named 'crictical' and 'recommended'

step2:
- go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
- check the box selecting 'Display the link to the Windows Update Catalog under' and 'save settings'

step3:
- click 'Windows Update Catalog' link in left frame
- in right frame click 'Find updates for Microsoft Windows operating systems'
- select 'WinXP SP1' from operating system list and click search
- click 'Critical Updates and Service packs' and select sort order by 'date' which lists all updates in inner window frame according to recent to oldest update.
- select 'Add' for all hotfix updates minus .Net Framework ones
- click 'Go to Download Basket' and browse to the location you created for the folder named 'critical' in step 1.
- hit 'Download Now' and watch them all download
- after download
- click 'Recommended updates' and select sort order by 'date' which lists all updates in inner window frame according to recent to oldest update
- select 'Add' for all hotfix updates minus .Net Framework ones
- click 'Go to Download Basket' and browse to the location you created for the folder named 'recommended' in step 1.
- hit 'Download Now' and watch them all download

step 4:
- create 2 batch files named critical.bat and recommended.bat
- place in critical.bat the following

What do the /z and /m switches do?

A group of hotfixes should never be installed in batch form. The intermediate restarts and overlaps between the updates makes this a risky and unproductive procedure.

MS has apps for net installs of updates---look into that.

I have been doing some reading since my last post and it seems that after sp1 you can install hotfixes without having to restart the PC more than once. THis quote is from Microsoft

Using Qchain.exe
Windows XP SP1 and all post-SP1 hotfixes have Qchain.exe functionality built in. You can install SP1, and then install any number of post-SP1 hotfixes without having to restart the computer in between.

The info is about 1/3 of the way down the page. It also explains the switches and how to set up a batch file properly, which, I assume, is where eva2000 got the format from.

All this said I haven't actually tried to run my own yet, I will let you know when I do. It will be all updates since sp1.
