Hi! I'm having trouble networking windows 2000 to windows xp and thought instead I can just upgrade this (win2000) computer up to XP. Is this possible or will I lose all my data?

I have 3 drives and could transfer important stuff to one drive and then install windows xp. Unfor. I don't have a zip drive to back up everything. Is this easy? Even possible?

    Any suggestions would be appreciated!

    Thanks!!

You can perform an upgrade, but you will probably have the same issue then as you are having now. What is wrong with your network?

Oh god, it's such a mess! I have a laptop with windows xp and a desktop with win2000. I cannot figure out how to network these computers.

The main reason I'm having trouble is with the folder naming. I can't find a place with play by play instructions on how to do this. I've never ventured into networking and need total baby steps. I just can't figure it out, I hate feeling retarded!!!

I try to make the download folder in the options that both computers give me and all of them say "you cannot place a shared file here, try again" or whatever. I can't figure out that part.

The computers don't show up on the network. I have the cable modem to the router and then to each computer.

Im so lost with all of this, I thought it would be easier to convert windows 2000 to XP and use the setup disc that XP came with....

I was thinking that I could use an online storage place too to backup for a matter of hours while I do this.

what do you think? Did I just make matters more confusing??

    LOL!!

    Thanks Kevin!

PS: I should also add that win2K isn't running all that great. Can't even do updates on it without totally messing it up!! It just hasn't been all that reliable for me.....

sounds to me like you may have a permissions problem on your network share you have. You may want to check the properties sheet of the folder under windows explorer and see what the permissions are.
You are considered to be in a workgroup environement. Which means users accessing the network need to have an identical account on every system they plan to access.
Such as user1 will have the same user1 account on everysystem.

Installing XP will probably have the same issue as it follows the same networking rules.
Plus you would have to purchase the additional license (if you haven't already).

    Hi,

thanks for responding. I'm off work tomorrow so I will actually have time to work on this some more....

Do you mean the properties of Windows Explorer? the only thing that I see that is changable in there is the "run with different credentials" part....

So, do I need to rename each computer and workgroups to be the same on each computer? That is the part I'm a bit confused with....

thanks again for replying!! :D
