Possible Spyware problem?

Hi all,
New to this BBS. Is it possible for spyware to only affect your internet dialup speed, and not bother the speed of your computer offline? I have been having this problem since July 4th. We have WinXP SP2, AOL9.0 Optimized SE, Norton Internet Security 2005, Adaware, and Spybot. Have been thru the paces with AOL Tech's, and am now scratching our heads wondering what to do next. ANY ideas would be greatly appreciated!!

While not likely I suppose it's possible. It could be the malware is trying to connect to the internet and somehow making it difficult for you to connect, tho to be honest I have never heard a user complain of this.

But it sure can't hurt to look a little deeper.

If, you have already run AdAware SE & Spybot Search & Destroy, with updated definitions, and are still having problems, next, we move onto HiJackThis v:1.99.1
DL the zip file to your desktop, then create a new folder on your C drive, called 'HJT' or 'HijackThis'. Then unzip the files to the new folder. When you run HijackThis.exe from C:\HJT folder and have it "Fixed checked" it will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary which is easily accessible. When you run HijackThis.exe from C:\HJT folder and have it "Fixed checked" it will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary which is easily accessible.
Run the program, and press Scan. You will notice the Scan button will turn into a "Save Log" button. Save the log and Post that log into this topic. DO NOT DELETE or modify anything yet, as some of it is needed to keep your system in good shape.

Someone will be along to look at your log soon as possible, we appreciate your patience. Remember, we are ALL VOLUNTEERS, those of us who help. And we do the best we can to answer posts as soon as we can. Logs are generally looked at in the order in which they are posted.

I followed your advice and ran HJT, and am posting the results. By the way, I have tried my updated Spybot 4 times today (with restarts in between) and now it finds 2 registry changes:

Windows Security Center.FirewallDisableNotify: Settings (Registry change, nothing done)

The Spybot findings can be set to 'Ignore' they are not finding anything which needs fixing, the next version of Spybot will fix this.

I also don't see anything in your logfile to indicate any malware.

I do however see alot of things that probably don't need to be running, mostly the HP stuff. Unless you do alot of on demand printing, start the programs manually.

And the lines referring to 'Connection help' also HP, I have never noticed those before. What are they supposed to do for you?

I tried to run a selective startup (msconfig utility) and de-selected alot of the HP stuff. When I restart, and check running processes, they are checkmarked and running again. Weird. Also, I went to the AOL Connectivity Tool and had it always recognize my different AV,Spyware,Adware programs. Still same speed problem online. Now, here's something I'm curious about..When I ran AOL Spyscan yesterday (7/8) it found (and deleted) 2 items: TrojanDownloader.WIN32.Ramet c:\program files\aol toolbar\toolbar.dll The only thing I haven't tried is Re-Install AOL. What's your take on all this?

Rather than using MSCONFIG, I'd prefer you use a start up manager, like Mike Lins start Up Manager or WinPatrol which gives you a little bit more.

In so far as AOL's alleged findings, well if there's one thing I have come to learn about anything AOL does, it's never done right. I find it most ironic that it finds it's own software as spyware!!

And your speed problems could also be related to dial up, which I'm assuming your on, seeing as you have AOL.

 

I uninstalled my AOL and installed Juno, just to see if the problem lies in AOL software....but still connecting at 11000kps. I brought my PC a friends house and got online at 11500kps (he usually connects at 44000kps).
I downloaded WinPatrol and ran it....didnt see anything abnormal. I can post the log for you if you have time to examine it?

Are you talking about the WinPatrol log? I suppose, tho I doubt it will yeild anything odd, but it can't hurt.

 

TeMerc - Thanks for your help......After lots of trial & error, I finally found out my problem. I uninstalled AOL, then used Juno to connect....still at 11000kps. Then I disabled SystemRestore, ran all of my Norton, Spybot, Adaware, etc. to catch anything buggy. Nothing. But then, I thought I would pop $49.95 and get a new modem. BINGO! I never heard of a modem partially functioning, but I guess it's true.
I realize this post actually should now be in the Internet Threads....Maybe anyone having similar troubles in the future should try replacing the modem first.
