This could be a case of "Can’t see the forest for the treesâ€, but anyway here goes.

    DSL Modem
2 PC’s each with it’s own NIC (One System with WIN98SE and the other with WIN ME)
Linksys BEFSR41 settings -- Factory default.

    Network
    Configuration Tab
    Client for Microsoft Networks
SiS 900 Based PCI fast Ethernet Adapter
    NetBEUI
    TCP/IP

    TCP/IP Properties
    Bindings—None selected
IP Address "” Obtain an IP Address Automatically
    DNS Configuration "“Disable DNS

    NetBEUI Properties
    Bindings—Client for Microsoft Networks

    Firewall "“ Zone Alarm Pro

GRC and Symantec Tests keep indicating Port 23 is open and all others are closed or Stealth. I’ve tried several setting changes and have had no success in closing down port 23. To the best of my knowledge I don’t think I have any Telnet Devices installed.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Assuming that you are running ZA on both PCs and that closing port 23 is one of the things you've tried, it could be they are reporting telnet access to the router.

Try this (and I'll assume you have the default 192.168.1.1 address for the router and the PC-A is 192.168.1.2 and PC-B is 192.168.1.3)

    From PC-A
    start~run~cmd
    telnet 192.168.1.1
You'll either be connected or be told the router actively refused the connection.

Try the same from PC-A to PC-B by IP address so
    telnet 192.168.1.3

    Newt, Thanks for the reply.
    This assumption is correct.

    Here's the results

My DHCP Server is 192.168.1.1.........result was "Could not open connection. "

My IP Address is 192.168.1.100.......result was "Could not open connection. "

I also tried as you indicated the (192.168.1.2) and (.3) with same results as indicated above.

Did you see if 23 is fowarded in the UPNP settings of the router?
I assume you know how to get there?

    ssmith10pn, Thanks for the reply.

If you recheck my original post I did state that all Linksys settings were factory default. So therefore there are no Forwarded Ports. But as a precaution, since your post, I did recheck the UPnP and nothing is selected for Port Forwarding.

    opena command windows and type:

    netstat -a

it will display all network connections.

Note, there are many trojans thagt uttilize the telnet port 23, one of which is Tiny Telnet Server. Some trojans go undetected by zone alarm because ZA is easy to get around. (in all honesty, if your router is doing it's job then you don't need ZA at all)

    TonyT, Thanks for the Info.
I'm very weak in DOS knowledge so an explanation on these results would be appreciated.
(First off there are no indication referencing a Port 23.)

My point was that UPNP will automatically foward needed ports. That's why I wanted you to check.
If the enable box in UPNP for port 23 is not checked you have nothing to worry about.

Do you have zone alarm installed on the PCs or the router?

    To All::::::::::::::::D :D :D

SUCCESS!! PORT23 Problem Solved at last!!
    Here’s How:
    Rt Click - Network Neighborhood
    Configuration - Dbl. Click TCP/IP
    Bindings Tab "“Uncheck All
    NetBIOS Tab "“ Uncheck All
    Configuration - Dbl. Click NetBEUI
    Bindings Tab - Uncheck All

As I said in my original post, this could be a case of "Can’t see the forest for the trees" and it was certainly true in this case. I failed to check my Network Neighborhood settings to see what was checked or unchecked. Simple, eh??

GRC and Semantec now check all Ports as being Stealth

Thanks to all who helped with their suggestions, it helped shake some cobwebs loose in my beady brain. :)

Glad you got it non-working. :D

Unbinding everything certainly should have done the job for you. But it's still interesting that Port23 was showing as open.

In your services, what startup mode is set for Telnet (may list as tlntsvr)?

And I wonder (gotta read a little) why my router gave "actively refused the connection" when I tried to telnet it whereas yours gave the same "unable to connect" as it got from the other PC.

I Love these negated (inverse) Comments :D

I'm at a complete loss on this one, sorry to say, I don't have an answer.

My understanding was that WIN98SE doesn't have Telnet, or the Dreaded "sshd" installed. When I did do some research, I was completely baffled why I even should have that Port 23 Problem to begin with. I had initially done what I thought was a normal setup for the Network settings, (TCP/IP etc), but inadvertently overlooked doing the "Unbinding ". That's when Port 23 popped up.
I did find this sight that may help out your query with a little more info than what I am able to give.

Edit: Just a passing thought ---if you want to know exatly how I had TCP/IP Network settings, let me know.

Oops. My bad on the Telnet service. 2K/XP thing and I'd somehow gotten confused on which operating systems you are using. It is in the initial post but ..... Oops. I guess I really need to do networking before I look at the OS section.

Please ignore everything after my Non-working. :D
