    Hi

Im trying to forward ports on my Inspiron 6400 but am having some problems. Hopefully someone can help?

    Setup:
    Netgear WGR614v6 Router
Inspiron 6400 with Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN
    Windows XP SP2

I have everything set up as on my previous laptop, the same static ip for the wireless network card, programs are using the same ports. The problem is the programs (soulseek and azureus) both say the ports are closed when I test them. I've re-checked my settings again and again but just can't see what the problem is.

    Thanks

Is your modem a combo modem/router?
If so you may need to first forward the ports from the modem to the IP address on the NetGear WGR614v6. THEN have the netgear forward ports to the computer.

Turn off all hardware/software firewall when checking.

EDIT - IP address of netgear router that modem/router 1st forwards ports to can be a bit confusing.
It's NOT the IP address of local LAN connection that Netgear sets up.
Rather it's the local address netgear gets from the modem/router.

In effect you have TWO local LAN connections.
1> modem/router to Negear router. [ ports forwarded just as if Netgear was a computer]
2> Netgear router to computer. [ports forwarded to computer]

I have a cable modem connected to a netgear wgr614 router which worked fine with the old laptop that had a netgear PCMCIA card.

Could it be that my intel card wont work with the netgear router? what will?

The intel card will work just fine.
I suggest you remove any existing port forwarding rules in the router, verify the ip address again on comp, resetup port forwarding in router. And verify that the windows firewall is completely OFF. To fully OFF windows firewall you must:
    1. open the windows firewall applet in control panel
    2. clear ALL checked items in the 2nd & third tabs
    3. first tab > disable the windows firewall
    4. go to control panel > admin tools > services > set windows firewall to Stopped and Disabled.
